Yesterday was going to be the day to get my 8 out on the raod but we decided to try to fix the leaky Power Steering pump Today we go it put back in today and now the STARTER died.

It started first try yesterday but when we tried to start it later it was clicking. We thought the battery maybe had died so we put it on a trickle charger. Today the starter would just click and nothing. I will take it to the local auto part shop and have them test it for sure but I think with 95% certianity that is what it is.

NOW I have to figure out if I can get a local shop to rebuild it quicker than I can get one ordered and deilvered. Any one use one of the High Troque versions every one advertised? Are they worth the difference in price?

I feel for you....going through much of the same "what next" occurrences.

I bought one of the starters from Woody but have not installed yet. Mine was/is intermittently doing the same thing yours is....often-times I'll turn the key and get a click, but nothing else. I've found that rocking the car in-gear or pushing slightly and letting the clutch out usually turns the starter enough off the flat spot to engage when I turn the key again.

Not a fun work-around, but it works for me until I can get the manifold off when I install my headers -- I'll put the new starter on then.

Find a Range Rover starter and slap 'er in there. No more worries!

The TR8 unit is large and prone to problems with overheating and failure. Range Rover unit (made by Marelli) is smaller and lighter, and works great.

Make sure you didn't melt the engine wiring harness that goes to the starter, oil pressure switch, and alternater. It gets hot under there if you still have the cats. I had the wiring short out against the cat once, and at first the starter just wouldn't click, then poof, smoke everywhere, panic, fire extinguisher, loosen battery cable, laugh in disbelief and shake head. Starters don't usualy go suddenly- wiring and contacts do. Get under there with the test light and check the connections. If you do opt for a new starter, go with a high torque unit out of a Range Rover. Half the weight and twice the spin. Plus if you have headers, they fit in without dropping the exhaust.

OK.... what range rover starter is a replacement for teh TR8? Headed to the parts store to get it tested right now.

Early nineties - check your PM's - there's an ebay example there.

I just bought a Rover starter from Woody Cooper for my TR8. Big difference! Got it in two days.

I went through two starters on my 8 before I got the hi torque starter. Best money I ever spent.
