Wedge TR8 tranny saga-- coming to a close?

Today I decided to take the suggestion of a BCFer and drain the TR8's 5spd of its oil and fill it with ATF to solve the issue with not being able to select 2nd gear for 15 minutes of driving.

The gear oil was really nasty and thick.

Filled with ATF, making a huge mess in the process. (Next time I say I'm going to change gear or rear-end oil in my garage, just shoot me first.) Hopefully I got it full...it was oozing out, so I think I got it.

Just took the car out--it's a really cold day (about mid 40s.) Went into second the first try!!!

It'll still buzz if you don't pull hard into gear. I think the balk plate is still out of alignment, but it works.

Now hopefully I don't burn-up the tranny with such thin oil -- but I'm guessing it'll be fine.

So I can't remember who suggested ATF, but thanks!!!

You'll be fine, I think it was a factory recall for colder climates because of the plastic oil pump could break with the thick oil. Use Redline D4 ATF for even better shifts and reduced noise, I have herd that even better is the ATF used in the new Corvettes but I think it's very expensive. 230,000 miles on my tr7 5 speed that I've owned sence 1983 and have never had a problem with the tranny using ATF, but the engine is now shot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Hey Sammy, I did the same with my 7 (same gearbox I think), and experienced the same results you have. I did however notice that the thinner fluid leaked around the shifter o-ring then down onto the mount. by the time I did anything about it the mount was gooey.

Just my $0.02, I did fix the leak and still run ATF.

I think I have the same leak with ATF fluid....can you give me an idea of where it is comming from, and how to fix it? Thanks John

I was the person told you about the ATF fluid. I read this in a repair/restoration manual, so I hope it is OK to do this. I have heard that dealers were doing this back in the 80's. Good luck John /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
