Wedge TR8 Paint

I received my car back from getting painted today and I noticed a few area's that were missed with the base coat. Since the area's that were missed are small and in inconspicuous areas, I would like to touch these parts up myself. However, there are a couple questions that I have regarding the base coat. First, if I rough the area up with 400 grit sandpaper, will there be a problem spraying basecoat over the clearcoat (and then apply clearcoat)? Secondly, will I be able to tell that I resprayed the area if done correctly? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Why not just take it back to where it was painted, and have them do it right?
It's your money, right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

The car is on blocks and doesn't have axles/wheels to push it on. It is a real job moving it around. Also, this shouldn't be a difficult task to do. Just need a little advice /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

I'm not a paint guy, but I wish you luck. Just make sure you post some pics of your beauty when you get it done or near done.

You need to sand down to the primer(don't go through) 400-600 grit is ok, spray your base and reshoot(blend) your clear. You need the right equipment and supplies for a perfect job, but if done correctly you will not be able to see the touch up. If your using rattle cans it's a little harder for a good match but their are a few places on the web that can mix your color and put it in a spray can. Such as www.levineautoparts.com/spraycanofto.html
Good luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the help MrBlueSky. I've sanded the areas down to the basecoat but not the primer. Is it necessary to go that far down or can I spray over the sanded basecoat? I plan to spray everything this weekend and will let you know how it goes...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

It would be better to go to the primer but if your careful you may be able to stop at the base. The problem is that you will be applying color over color which MAY change the final outcome. This really depends on what color your car is, if its black or white you'll be able to blend it better than some of the metallic maroons and br greens. Keep me informed.

Hi TR8 fan. I just got done painting my TR8 so consider me an expert, yeah right. Painting and getting professional results is not done lightly and not without the right tools and materials. You can do a reasonable patch job with spray cans but don't expect it to go unnoticed as a patch job.

My second best advice is to get on a car painting forum and do some research on the work you're about to do. Try Paintucation. The guys on that board are worth their weight in gold because most of them are pros and have probably been in your shoes.

That's my second best advice. Ny first is to agree with most of the other responses and get that thing back to the guy you paid to do the job and make him do it right. As a businessman myself, I would be devastated if I found out that a customer was doing a patch job on something I sold him and if he's legit he'll do the right thing. If he's not legit, there's always Judge Judy. Good luck.

Paintucation is an excellent website and has answered many of my questions. Thanks. I will be painting with Dupont base and clear using a HVLP gravity fed gun with a 1.4 tip. As far as returning the car back to the painter, I will pass. I can't say that he did the best job and I don't want to add to the dilemma. There is going to be a lot of elbow grease to get all the runs and orange peel out. I won't stop until the finish product is show quality. This is when I know I'll be satisfied. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The color is Indigo Blue (Metallic). I finished painting today and it came out a lot better than I expected. The base coat blended very well and you can't tell were the patch is. One run in the clear coat, but overall very satisfied. I appreciate everyone's help with this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
