Wedge TR8 Headers

Thinking about buying the coated set of headers from the wedge shop, any words of wisdom? Will I notice an increase in performance? Also, how much louder will the car be?

Thanks!

The headers are a big increase in perfromance and give a nice rumble to the exhaust. The only issue are the extension tubes that go between the headers and the middle mufflers. They are a 50-50 chance of lining up right and they do not get coated. If and when you decide and go to install them you will need to decide if you are going to remove part of the battery tray to get the passenger side header in or jack the right side of the engine up so the header clears the battery tray (as used for on the TR7).If you have a stock TR8 you will need to plug the EGR Valve line that runs from the drivers side exhaust manifold to the top of the intake manifold between the two carbs. The car will not be loud but will have a nice rumble as I mentioned before. If you want more of a rumble then remove the rear mufflers and go with straight pipe out to the bumper.

RSM- I purchased said headers ,uncoated, last winter. I am about to install them. I had them coated myself as I installed 3 O2 bungs. What Mike said isn't always true. Mine went in and out with out hassles.I think it has to do with how big the subframe spacers are.
I concur with the mid section advice. Mine didn't come close to fitting.Still haven't figured that part out yet.

They may generate a bit more heat in the engine compartment, and mine hang fairly low. Scraped and dented the passenger side a while back on an exposed tree root in the yard.

Also, I had mine ceramic coated. Not entirely pleased, as it appears that rust is popping up on them... :frown:

I drove mine to the local performance muffler shop with strait headers and had them do their magic. H-pipe, muffler then resonator. Not loud, nice rumble. I had trouble clearing the battery tray and ended up dropping the header in with the engine partially up in the air.

Thanks, mine is an original stock TR8, have the Holley conversion on it, and removed all the smog stuff a year ago. I also have the Falcon stainless steel exhaust on it as well. I am hoping installation will go smoothly. I do not mind the rumble, but do not want it to be loud. Call me an old fart, but I like to be able to enjoy my surroundings as well as my car! I am looking for more performance, that is my sole reason for the upgrade, the original cats and pipes up front are in good shape, I am just looking for more performace, and before I spend the money, want to make sure I will notice a real improvement?!

Thanks!

RS-You will like the sound of the headers and the falcon stainless exhaust. I have heard many TR8s as what you want that sound nice and present a pleseant tone. Like I siad it has a nice rumble.

Am I the only person ever to have problem putting a socket on said headers.
actually the socket fits on nice . It's after it's tightened and won't come off that is the problem. So far only 1 on one side.
I must have a funky set because as many as have been sold I would have thought this this would have been addressed.
Am I being to finicky?

Guys-The headers all seem to be different and especially if you get a set of older uninstalled set. Kirk used 3 different styles of flanges. The welding sometimes is on the inside or on the outside. The Huffaker headers are also going to be fun fitting when it comes time. Each set is an adeventure in one manor or another. I will say the only common issue is the little short bolt with the small head goes on the #4 cylinder bottom hole. What a thrill! I have put on over 70 sets on my cars and when I worked at The Wedge Shop for 8 years!

I had to wait for Kirk to make them last year.

What small bolt? Second one back on the passenger side?

Yes the second one back on the passenger side on the bottom because of the aggressive bend in the tube. Kirk the father no longer does the headers, his son does now and if you ask for the big bore headers you are really at his mercy....he hates making them!

I got what ever Woody asks for

That is the bolt the socket is stuck on

DNK-Did you use the 7/16-inch small hex head bolt or was it a short 9/16-inch (head diameter) hex head bolt? I always use a wrench on that particular bolt and never a socket.

Mike- the only ones that came with the tubes were the small 7/16's.
If this is a known help why the heck has Woody not sent this with em?

Used the small hex with a wrench. thanks Mike
