Wedge TR8 fill neck on gas tank

Does anyone know if the fill neck (from the gas cap to the tank)on the 1980's Triumphs or on the TR8/TR7 was galvanized?

Mine has a little rust here and there. I wire brushed it off, it looks great. I was wondering if there was any coating I could use to keep it from rusting again when I reinstall it.

I am pretty sure it isn't galvy. The top and bottom sections are soldered together. Solder won't stick to galvy. If you heat that area up, you can take them apart and remove the little flapper door that always breaks and drops down covering the fuel opening.

That's great info!
I was staring at the flap wondering how to clean it.
Any ideas to keep it from rusting again? Should I just POR 15 it?

I justed loked at my recently removed tank and filler neck and it has the typical anodized/silvery-gold plating more so silver on the outside. Now on the inside it was just straight silver and I had a little bit of rust at the top but Im not reusing it! So if you can clean it and coat it with something you should be good. Now if you sdo the inside be careful because gas may remove the coating.

I would leave it alone. But if it really bothers you, remove it, wire brush it, remove the little flap since it's out, paint it and reinstall it. The trick is getting the three screws at the top out. They have a tendency to seize from rain water gathering in there. Remember it also attaches to the gas tank rubber fill hose inside that black panel in the trunk with a hose clamp. Reinstallation is a major pain and might require dropping the tank a little.

I dropped the tank because it was rusty, so I have everything out anyway.
I am having trouble getting a new fuel pump though- I was hoping to cross reference one locally, but haven't had any luck.

For the fuel pump its self I have found there are about 20 similiar pumps that look all the same but either have a different hose connection or strainer/filet sock. They were used from the 1964 Buick special up to the mid 80ies buick and chevys. I know Woody at The Wedge Shop has the right replacement which includes the sock filter for about $70. I have found from trying different ones that they are the right fit but way too loud like a continuous buzzing. I think the last one I bought weas about $50 without the filter sock and that was another $15. The other issue is many autopart stores just do nto carry them or they obsolete and cannot be ordered and finding them online is a gamble.

Thanks guys. Todd nailed it. I cross referenced the Napa part, and got a pump and sock filter at Advanced Auto Parts. $39 for pump and $14 for the sock filter. I should of just ordered it from Woody and got the exact one. The auto parts store had several pumps, that all looked the same. So I may be taking a chance on GPM.

I am wire brushing the brackets and removing the scaly varnish and rust form the parts.

I also took apart the fill neck, de-soldered it, removed the flapper and the funnel piece it attaches too. Then cleaned it all up with a wire brush : )

No more rust!

After a little searching, I found the Delphi version on Amazon.com with the sock for $27.77. I bought a couple of them. The Delphi crosses over to the Airtex pump that I believe most places carry. Turns out the TR8 pump has the same specs as one I need for my BMW. BMW wants over $200 for the same pump. No surprise there. On the BMW it is used as a lift pump to get the fuel up to a secondary higher pressure pump. Same as on the TR8 fuel injection cars.

I wonder what if I have enough pressure in this one to get the fuel bowls filled. I have the stock carb set up, but will probably move to a 4 bbl, 390 CFM but may want something higher.

The stock TR8 carbs fuel pump will easily push enough fuel for a 4 barrel. Remember these pumps are used on anything from a 4 cylinder up to a V8 so no worries at all for keeping up with your right foot!
