Wedge TR8 Cooling Fan Diagnosis

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere...did not see any posts.

I have a TR8 currently in for paint work that I will be working on soon to make road-ready.

As you look in at the fans with the hood open, the left fan does not operate at all, the right fan comes on in what appears to be the high-speed circuit

1) Think the left fan motor ia bad, but could be other causes also... looks like you can replace with Fiat units, anybody done that with success?

2) Other faults to check or aspects of the circuit to diagnose?

3) Better to just start new and get a modern single large puller fan. Any recommendations or "gotchas" for those that have done this conversion?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris, in case you haven't seen this page on TR8 fans systems give it a look see.

It could be a bad fan motor as they are supposed to both operate at the same time, low speed they get a lower voltage and on high speed they get full voltage. My left fan had quit working last summer and it turned out to be corrosion on the connector for that particular fan. Cleaned the connections and they work fine now. Give that page a look and see if it helps you out at all.

If you don't feel like messing with 27 year old Lucas electrics, go with a new electric fan. Woody sells a nice Mr. Gasket one that he gets from a racing wholesaler. It pushes more air and it weighs less. While your at it, consider a new aluminum radiator. https://www.thewedgeshop.com I have one in my street car and one in my race car. They work very very well. Small price to pay considering the cost of a rebuild caused by an overheat.

Woody also sells replacement fans for the orignal two fan set up. I think the fans he sells are actually from a Boxster. Wedgeparts and TSI are also good places for all things Wedge.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

That's a great resource page -- thanks Shawn. I will see if it is something simple like connector corrosion that makes sense -- and then see where the diagnosis and alternatives take me.

Appreciate the tips regarding Woody and Wedgeparts as well. I saw the Boxster fan kit that Wedgeparts has, looks pretty neat.

Chris
