Wedge TR8 clutch fuild leak

Hi there,
Whats the best way to look for a clutch fluid leak?
With the engine running? Off? Shifting? Or what?
There's no fuild on the carpet, or under the car,
can't figure out where it's going or where it's coming from.
Any ideas or help, thanks

It's a pretty short simple system. Master cylinder pumps juice down a reasonably short run of pipe to the slave cylinder. Engine & shifting have nothing to do with it. If you want to look for the spurt, or drip, have someone sit in the car and operate the clutch pedal while you observe all the components.

Unlike many other things in the TR8, this is something that remains unchanged in it's composition and function since the TR2.
 
It is hard to understand what your problem is. If you can not see any fluid, where and why do you think it is leaking?

Is it that you can not shift well when you press in the clutch?

You may want to check the hose between the clutch master & slave cylinder. If it is old, it may bulge when under pressure instead of pushing in the slave cylinder.

It may be that the master or slave or both are bypassing fluid. They won't leak fluid on the ground, but will perform poorly.
 
If you don't see any fluid up top, my bet is that it is leaking at the slave inside the bell housing. Easy rebuild or just replace the slave. While your at it, rebuild the master as well. That is a little tougher as you need to be a contortionist to get at the bolts inside the car and on the other side of the firewall. I have also seen the steel tube wear a hole in it where it passes along the dust shield on the bell housing. FYI, TSI imports sells a braided stainless hose that goes from the master all the way to the slave. I like it better than the metal pipe. If you rebuild both, go with dot 5 silicon fluid after your done. It works great in the clutch hydraulics, just don't use it in the brake system.
 
If you go at the TSI hose, I did. I bought this as I didn't like the way it connected to the master.
