hi guys, ok , i know i'm not suppose to remove my cats.,
but,
1, if i needed to, "for only a little while", "doing maintenence work", not for road use of coarse, wanted to install something else, any ideas?

2, also, thoughts on the different headers available out there.
thanks tom

Go ahead. Everybody's doing it. For the most part, the headers that are out there all come from the same place,(Kirk Racing) and then are resold by various venders. You can buy from a vendor or from Kirk directly. There are headers for the Rover V8 that are not specifically designed for the TR8, so beware that they probably won't drop in. There are also some very rare 4 into one headers made for racing, but not sure you can find them for sale. The basic 4 into 2 into 1 versions work well and will give you a bump in HP. They rust up quick. Coating them helps, but the second you spill oil on them, they will rust up as well. They do make the engine compartment cleaner, cooler and easier to work on.
You can change a small starter with the headers in place. Most times they will hit one of the frame rails and need to be bent out of the way.

thanks for the reply,
should i maybe just go to my local muffler shop and see if they can make a pipe in the shape of the cat?

Just be sure you have the right TR8 system to drop Ted's test pipes in. I think they only work for carb'ed cars, the FI cats are one long pipe from the exhaust manifold to the center mufflers.

Not for 81, at least. They don't unbolt from the pipe that goes to the center mufflers.

Thought about it after Darrell posted.
Do you have any O2 bungs on your cats Shawn?

Wonder if mine were originally carb cats as mine only had an O2 on one side.
CIIAW, didn't the fuelies have both sides O2'd?

Megasquirt addition? Do you have one of those late 80 federal FI cars. VIN is something like TPVDV8BT. Both possibilities.

Good question, mine is a 7 that used a totaled 8 to completely swap into.
Everything down to the brake hardware

Maybe the 8 was that.

Don,

The stock TR8 FI cars do have O2 sensors on each side. The ECU controls each bank separately. That is the reason that they had to use a Lucas ECU rather than an off the shelf Bosch unit like the TR7, Bosch didn't have an ECU then for a V8.

the cats look like the ones on my carb. car.
so if i go with test pipes i have to finagal them?
and if i go with headers i have to finagal them also?
thanks tom

The test pipes that Ted sells are a straight bolt in for the carbed cats. At least has been my experience.

I just put a set in and well.......it required a lot of work/rework. These were put on an original exhaust TR8 coupe. Bending and welding was required. Just as anything british it is never a straight no fuss deal.
