My AC went out with a horrendous squealling noise. I think it may be the clutch but the sound was like a seized bearing. Too cold in the garage to check further at present, but I want to fix it as soon as possible. The service manual states that the clutch is not repairable and must be replaced with the compressor as a unit. I have not been able to locate either a repair source or a replacement. Anybody know of any such sources? I have access to a used unit but feel that would only be a temporary fix probably not worth the freon recharge.
 
What kind of compressor does an '8 use ?

Usually it's obvious if the clutch itself fails, but since you generally have to remove the clutch to replace the bearing anyway, it doesn't much matter which is bad.

The good news is that the AC compressors I've seen on other Triumphs (like my Stag) are dead-common units that any AC service place should be able to source, given your old unit as an example. And since it's actually illegal to do it yourself (unless you are licensed AC technician AND have the proper recovery equipment), it's probably best to let them deal with it anyway :^)
 
Thanks, Randall. I don't know what compressor the 8 has. I suspect it is the same as the old 60s Buick 215, but haven't been able to locate info on that, either. I emailed Woody and he is looking into his sources for me. If Woody doesn't come through, then I'll try a local AC service place as you suggest.
 
The TR8 used a standard Delco item. I have the current NAPA part number "somewhere" - will try to dig it up and get it to you.

Mickey , You got a part # for the PS pump?
 
The NAPA part number for a NEW (not rebuilt) compressor is 3620206. Bolted right up, including clutch and proper connections!

Mine was OK, so I didn't have to source another. However, I've seen some postings on this before - have to do some digging, but I'll see what I can find...

I picked up my NAPA AC compressor this morning. The NAPA #3620206 cited by Mickey lists as a replacement for GM #1131063 which is the Delco # listed in the TR8 Service Manual. Price: $300 ( List $432) The Fox Valley is forecast to receive another heavy snowfall tomorrow followed by some more cold weather so I won't be working on the 8 this coming week.

Mickey, I'm trying to find a local AC shop that can expell, store, replace and top up my R 12 freon. Were you able to maintain the R 12 or did you convert to the new stuff?
 
Sorry - been out of town with no computer access!

Mine was converted to R134, and I think the compressor I listed has those connections.

I believe you'll need to buy another filter/drier as well as change out the fittings.
