Wedge TR7

Biggest flaw in the TR7 might just be the way folks feel about it. Seems you'll need a thick skin....check out the recent thread "50 worst cars".

To its' credit I remember one of the sportscar magazines saying at the time...why in the world would you buy a 924 when the TR7 offers so much more.

I'd say look verry carefully at the cooling system. If it shows any signs whatsoever of corrosion (like marks where coolant has weeped at odd spots); or any tendency to overheat, RUN AWAY !

The aluminum head/iron block combination is very prone to dissimilar metal corrosion damage if the antifreeze isn't changed religiously; plus the head is apt to warp if the engine has ever been overheated. Since the camshaft runs directly against the head casting (no bearings), head distortion tends to be a disaster. New heads are NLA and corroded/warped ones can only be repaired at great expense by people with lots of experience and machine tools.

(Yes, I know, that page is written for a Stag. But the TR7 and Stag motor have a great deal in common, except the Stag has twice as many heads for twice as much trouble /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Body wise.... check the strut towers, particularlly on the driver side where brake and clutch fluid drip and can cause rust. the rear where the trailing arms ,ount have been known toget weak. I love the cars, parts easy to find, easy to work on, safe as far as lbc's go. But look at an TR8 and enjoy the V8. JMHO

Aside from the usual problems that plaqued the TR7, keep in mind that 77 was a big change over year. The early 4 speed cars should be avoided. The 5 speed cars built after July 77 are better a better choice. The four speed cars had a weak tranny and rear end combo, as well as an inferior ectrical system.

I like mine. I have two, a fixed head and a drop head. Plus I picked up a drop head (TR8) for a parts car. One of my easier cars to work on. My biggest complaint are with the brakes.

I agree that the brakes on the 7 are Horrible, the 8 had upgraded brakes (still weak, just not totally junk like the 7's) And all Triumphs have Lord Lucas electric problems, Thanks to the unions attempts to sabatoge the company for better wages.....the quality of the earlier cars was shoddy.

Did I mention I recommend the TR8?
