Cleaned up and fired up my 80 TR7 today. Its been sitting in the barn barely used for the past couple of years.I had forgotten how much fun they are. Just as fun but in a different way as the TR8. Easier to toss around, engine more responsive. Lighter steering,( my PS is not working in the 8)These cars are an absolute bargain for the money. I an a ALL things TR guy,I love my 6..3, but the TR7 really is the better car. No yelling, its just an opinion.

Speaking of tossing it around, compare a 4 wheel drift in a good TR7 to a good TR6. If you can 4 wheel drift a TR3 your a REAL man.

I think I'll go up to the MGB forum and start some trouble.
Just kidding, was already there commenting on SU's

Sounds like you had a good day!

I hear you on the steering - I took the power steering belt of the TR8 today since the unit isn't holding fluid. steering is definitely a LOT heavier now. (not complaining)

Out of curiosity, what is it about the 7 that you find better then the other Triumphs (including the 8!)?

The poor 7 is kind of the bastard step child of the TR line, but I have been interested in the 7 for years... but stayed away due to it's reputation. Maybe you can convince me otherwise. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Well 1st off I like em all. Its only better than the TR8 in its lightness an a willing engine to rev. 5500rpm's no problem.I think the brakes might be a little better too.Under no circumstances would I trade my 8 for a 7.As far as the other TR's,the 7 has ROOM!!!. At my age that counts. Its also SOLID... Torque, not there, for that a 6 or 8. We all have owned TR6's great cars,I love em,but honestly,in stock form are you really comfortable at 90/100+? in a stock TR6. Same for the twisties. Years ago I hated the 7, moocho ugly to my eyes, now I think it looks good, and apparently so do other people. Its no TR6 or TR3 for esthetics, but still a sharp car. I think of my Brits as I think of food,I like em all. OK now for the whinein,I am a Brit car guy,but when the MG folks bad mouth the TR7 convetible,(early years maybe)it hacks me off. Its a better car than the B,hands down.Dont even ask me about the rubber bumper B monstrosities. An even better example, I had a very nice 69 MGC roadster,a good car.The engine was strong and powerful, great if your farming.Awful if you rev it past 3500 rpms. Its a valuable collector car,and a good road car,but not much of an enthusasits car in stock form. That said I will now have to re-register on the forum under a new name.

I have a '6, but I drove a '79 TR7 as a daily driver for two years. I loved it. I drove all around the South, and it never broke down or refused to start. It was the zippiest, most brilliantly handling car I've driven, and I sold it only because I was in grad school and couldn't afford a new water pump (the part is cheap, the labor is unbelievable, and I couldn't do it myself).

I want to get another '79 one day; I miss it tremendously.

Get over to VTR Valley Forge in July. I'm sure you can find someone who'll be happy to show one off. I will, if we make it!

CAll me silly, but checking the records, there is really very little weight difference between the 7 and the 8. THe 7 is fun, but the rumble of the 8 and acceleration just makes it that much better, IMHO

my tr7 dhc has been over 125 mph and seemed to stick to the road better the faster I went. No floaties like other cars. My tr7 fhc out handles, out accelerates and has a higher top end than my mgb-gt (both are 4 speed models--both have dual su carbs).

Thanks Mickey! The wife's birthday is that weekend, so I suspect we wont be up there for the show! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

So what's the deal??? I can think of no better gift than a trip to PA in July! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Not really much weight difference between the two cars. The lightest are the coupes (4cyl and 8cyl) but not by much there either. Don't be fooled by the four extra cylinders of the V8, it only weighs 28lbs more than the four cylinder. If your TR7 has better brakes than your TR8, then there is something wrong with your TR8's brakes. The TR8 has ever-so-slightly larger rotors and calipers and a different rear wheel cylinder from the five speed TR7's. The difference between the two is largely academic though and one of the biggest weak spots on the wedge cars. If your TR7 has narrower tires, it will 'feel' lighter/more toss-able than a wider tired TR8. That and the power steering of the TR8 causes a slight disconnect in steering feel compared to the rack and pinion of the TR7.

Personally, between the two, I'll keep the V8. I like spinning 3,000rpm at 80mph in fifth gear and being able to roll on the throttle and break the ton in a rapid manner without having to downshift. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Yup I know all that. My TR7 has 205 BFG's T/A's on it. The TR8 has R&P also but the PS is disconnected. Why is the steering now much harder to turn? Should it feel like my TR7? Like I said I prefer the TR8 also.

I went and looked at the TR8's on ebay, INTERESTING! the black coupe in Pittsburgh (Close enough I would be willing to go check out for anyone interested) appears to be a pre production model by teh VIN, but it looks like it has a TR7 overflow bottle under the hood. Prehaps because it was a pre productinon model?

The Silve/blue coupe in Ohio claims to have ABS. HMMMM If true, they are both pretty unique cars. I may go look at the coupe just cause I am dumb that way....

Ted from TSI is real good at spotting puesdo 8's and seems to have knowledge of where every TR8 in the states are.

I have had both an 7 and and 8. I had/have 205s on both. The ride in teh 8 is just so much more pleasing, the power in all gears, and the exhaust sound.... oh the sweet exhaust sound... no need for a stereo
