Wedge TR7 Won't Start When Engine is Warm...

I recently purchased a 1980 TR7 and when she's cold, she'll start right up. But, after I run her for a bit and turn her off, she refuses to start back up. She turns over fine, but doesn't seem to be getting any fuel. If I shoot some starting fluid into the carbs, she fires right up. She has twin Strombergs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark - I'm far form an expert here but it sounds like a fuel related issue rather than electrical.

Judging from your list of cars this is probably too basic, but reluctant hot starting is often caused too much heat making the fuel flow iffy to the engine, the fuel might be boiling in the fuel lines or carb.

Does she have a heat shield installed?

Coils can sometime break down once hot so that, or ignition related consumables like condenser might be worth changing, but that would not be 'cured' by the starting fluid.

I'm sure more sage members of the forum will jump in to help here...
 
I too wonder if this is not a heat related issue. Aren't the carbs sitting right on top of the motor? Maybe a good flush of the cooling system would help lower running temps and reduce the heat getting to the carbs during cool down.
 
I'll check the fuel lines, to make sure they aren't laying directly against anything too hot, but the engine itself doesn't run hot at all.

Could it possibly be anything with the automatic choke messing things up somehow?
 
Could be that you have the carbs set too lean; she'll start cold because the choke is enrichening the mixture enough but struggles to start when the choke pulls off into the too lean mixture.
Check the plugs after a decent drive, if they have white deposits on them then that's likely the problem.
