Deep into full engine rebuild. Does any one know where to get valve shim kits for the tr7. Rimmer bros, victoria, moss start at .090 and I need .083 and .086. Do any other cars use the same size shims...Saab 99 or jaguar? Any ideas, and thank you in advance. Can not wait to get back ON THE ROAD!

Yes, the Saab shims are the same, as are the Jensen-Healey, Lotus 907 shims. There may well be others that use the same shims, but these are the ones I'm sure of. Good Luck

Call Dave Bean Engineering. Lotus guys, but they'll lower themselves to talkin' to a TR guy. :jester:

BTW, there is a warning circulated on the Stag mail list, to be sure the shims you use do not have chamfered edges. Supposedly the ones with chamfers have a tendency to walk out of place and hold the valve open.

Also check to be sure that the end of the valve stem hits the shim. If the keepers hit the bucket first, not only does the shim not control the clearance but a keeper can become dislodged with disastrous results.

:iagree: with all of what Randall said, PART of what Todd says...

The shims are hardened, LAPPING them is possible. Some #400 or #600 Wet-or-Dry 3M sanding paper, motor oil, a (very) FLAT smooth area of marble or steel plate, oil the paper and use "figure eight" motion to keep the shim from developing a "ramp" angle.

...and expect to take a while doin' it.

Do NOT attempt to do this on a grinding wheel.

I'd call Bean.

EDIT: Just thought of another place, much closer to you: R.D. Enterprises, south of you in PA: rdent.com.

Doc,

I have a wet grinder with a mag base,at work, that would handle that job.

If SAAB 99 shims work I still have my collection. I've got an .082 & .0865 you're welcome to. Need spares? I've got em up to .103.

Steve

Saab used the same engine... bass-ackwards.

Doesn't everyone? :jester:

Remember Doc, its not the tools, its how you use them. :jester:
