Wedge TR7 Transmission -- how do you know if it's broke?

I'm rebuildin' my TR7 engine right now and have been wondering about the transmission. Since it's out, how do I check to see if I need to do any rebuild work on it? It worked/shifted fine when it was in the car, so I have no reason to suspect it.

Is there anything I can/should check while it's out and easily accessible?

I'm not aware of anything you can check, but my "mentor" said that the 5 speed was pretty much "bulletproof." And my daddy always said "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
 
Don't touch it!

If it's leaking, you might want to replace outer gaskets/seals. And if the oil has been in a while, you might change it. Otherwise, like Obi says, "If it ain't broke..." Transmissions are the best example of that rule.

I rebuilt the 5 speed this past summer. It was certainly a time consuming job. If the transmission worked well before taking it out, there not much that I would do with it. However, if you are going to separate the transmission and replace the gaskets, I would also change the oil pump gears. Mine were in very bad shape (missing teeth, broken, etc..) Its just cheap insurance that will ensure it has continual oil flowing as well as there easy to change.
 
I agree, after having to rebuild mine a couple of summers ago. If it worked fine, maybe replace the pump gears and maybe a new clutch as long as your there.

i sent mine out and had the pump gears and synchros and bearings replaced.

Actually, with the relatively warm and dry weather this winter, I've had her out a few times this year. The storage place is only about a mile from my house. In fact, I'm planning to get her today! So far she's fired up really quick...so guess I got that cold start problem in the F/I fixed from last year. Of couse, she goes back there at night as the wife still wants her car in the garage. I usually plan on having her out for good by the first of April.
