Wedge TR7 starter replacement question

I am sure that my starter and/or starter soloniod are bad. I have ordered a replacement. My question is should I just replace the soloniod, or go through all the labor to replace the whole starter. It seems like a big job, from "the Book" having to remove exhaust pipes and such. Has anyone replaced their starter? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Hello. I replaced mine on my '78 last summer, and it isn't really that hard to do. Yes, you have to drop the exhaust pipes, but there is a special way you can turn and twist the bugger to get it out with your knuckles in tact. I didn't find this special way though. I have even been told that you can change it by bringing it up through the top, but I would not believe it until I see it. The toughest part, acutually was re-attatching the exhaust to the manifold with the bolts. It is hard to get a wrench on the top of them.
Look at an hour and a half or so, and make sure the car is cooled off. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

i put my starter in and out a dozen times or so on my 76 fhc over the last month (at least it seems that way). it got so i could do the task in about 20 minutes. it's easier on a car without a catalytic converter.
