TR7 Needle in Spitfire Carb!

The Spitfire I bought almost three months ago was in need of a replacement metering needle and jet. The needle was badly scored and appeared to have been sanded by someone. It was gulping fuel and not atomizing well. The jet was oversized slightly as well. Since I knew I'd have to replace the needle (B5CH) and jet in the carb body and I hadn't grabbed one of my old carbs last time I was in my hometown from one of my parts cars, I decided to have a little fun experimenting. I bought a B1EP needle for a TR7 on ebay for $12. I drilled my existing worn jet up to .100, put it together and started it. I knew it wouldn't be perfect on the first try. It was slightly lean. I tapped the jet down to .112 depth (started at .06) from bridge and am now running it with the needle pretty close to face flush with piston. Took it for a test drive and was amazed. The low end is slightly better but the mid and upper are on steroids. It even purrs like a kitten at idle. I couldn't believe it. Now I just have to see how the gas mileage turns out. I'm excited to see what it will do once I get my header on in the next couple weeks.
