Hello everyone,
After reaching the tender age of 40, I decided to do something thoroughly impractical but fun, and bought the car I drooled over as a teen—an ‘80 TR7 DHC. It took almost two years just to find one locally (it rains all the time here, convertibles aren’t popular). I finally found one I could afford, somebody else’s project car, most of the engine in the trunk. Now I’d like to restore it to drivable condition.
I’ve got a lot of questions, but here’s what’s bothering me the most: The Camshaft.
According to Haynes, the camshaft journal should measure 1.23 to 1.235 in. If they don’t, says the book, the whole head should be replaced. My cam journals ALL measure 1.123 in. Yet the camshaft fits tightly. They are all the same and perfectly round. There is no noticeable slop and the Plastigage is so flattened that I can’t get a real accurate reading. I need to get some smaller Plastigage, but even if I do, I can’t find a spec for what the clearance should be.
Replacing the head would put this project out of reach financially, so I could use some advice from people who’ve had experience with these engines. Help me.
Thanks in advance.
