Wedge TR7 Buick Conversion

My TR7 has been sitting waiting for me to find an engine replacement. I was hoping to find a rebuild but have had no luck after looking for a year. Now I am thinking about putting a Buick V6 into it and looked at Johnscars.com that I found here in the archive. Has anybody used this kit, and if so, what has been the experience and long term outcome? Thanks kindly.

Haven't done that, but understand that it's a good alternative.

Any chance of dropping a Rover V8 in there?

$$$$$$$ By the time you finish sourcing all of the parts, you would be better off just buying a TR8. That is unless you have some of the parts needed all ready lying around. If you need a TR7 motor, I have several you can have. Non are perfect. You have to come get them. Unfortunately I won't be going to Carlisle this year, so no delivery on this end. If you do opt for the Buick V6, I have a couple of the somewhat hard to find BOP bell housings needed to put the T5 tranny behind it. Rover stuff is expensive compared to American V8s, so my next V8 swap is going to be a LS1. More fabrication needed than your standard Rover swap, but HP per dollar ratio is far better with the LS1 V8. Just need to button up the Rover 4.0 liter turbo TR8 project before I start on another.

I read about putting the Rover engine in, but the Buick reads as a better choice to me. I don't know of any domestic company with a conversion package.

I might take you up on the TR7 motor, so thanks!. I just want to get it on the road, and don't want to spend a lot of bucks on it. That's why I thought the Buick conversion might not be too bad expense-wise since I hadn't found a motor.

Dan -

If you'll PM me your email address, I'll forward a Word document that outlines the Rover swap. Great info, regardless of your decision.

Don't let the the fact that is a Rover engine scare you - excellent partsn availablity due to their use in so many of those big SUVs.

Yeah, I was reading about the evolution of the engine into the Discovery SUV. It looks like a good conversion, but I am worried about the cost versus just finding an engine somewhere to drop in. Rimmer used to carry full engines, even Sprint engines, but no more.

C.L. would be good if I could scan the entire country for a TR7 engine. If you know how to do that, please let me know. If not, would all members kindly scan their local C.L. for me ....haha. Something will work out.

I use zimkiv.com to search multiple craig's list sites in
different cities.

Almost hate to give up my secret weapon for searching CL, but here it is. Fill in the blanks for what you search for most and save it to your favorites. Every time you click on it, you'll see every CL, ebay, and Kijiji, for the entire country, for your search parameters. I have mine set up to look for Triumphs 75-82, but once I'm there, I look for other stuff as well. Parts look up is especially cool.

Todd,

That was the link I gave him above (filled out for TR7 parts).

I agree that it's great for parts or cars although there was a car it recently didn't find in a western Craigslist for some reason.

Hi I'm new here, but I managed to find a company that does the kit for the TR7 Buick V6 conversion. I bought one its about $700 and very complete. I found an engine and 5speed trans and bunch of stuff for about $1500. Still have not quite finished it, but the quality of the kit and instructions seems to be good.

Enjoy!
