Wedge TR7 1, Sam nothing

Well, after visiting three stores, I found a check valve to fit the TR7 air injection. $20 and a few minutes later...ignition, accelerate...

... POP ...

The backfire is still there.

Can you say "diverter valve?"

Trouble is that the DV is built into the air pump on a 1980! It looks like I'm going to have to remove the belt to the pump! DRAT!
 
ok Sammy, now might be the time to implement the Walter method of fixing this problem. Pull the air pump off tos it in the trash and then plug up the line running to it. I did that on my spit and have never had another problem with it.
 
Yup...that's the plan. Actually, I'm just going to remove the belt to the pump

Keep in mind that if you remove the belt and leave the air pipes from the pump connected to the exhaust ports, that the exhaust gases will back-travel into the pump and ruin it in no time.
You can leave the pump in place, but be sure that all the plumbing connecting it to the exhaust system is plugged or removed.
BTW, it seems to me that MGBs and Midgets used an external valve for this function, called a "gulp valve".
 
Well, it is toasted anyway, since the diverter valve inside the pump is bad, and they don't sell diverter valves to fix it.

But I'll probably just remove the whole sh'bang anyway. It just adds weight!
