TR6 TR6 wiring

Trying to get most of the wiring working in my TR6.I find that the purple wires in my car seem to only have power when the ignition is in the on position. In checking at the fuse box the brown incoming to the fuse box(which passes thru the fuse to purple) seems to be switched with the key.Since this powers circuits such as hazards, horn and interior lights I assume these circuits should not switched.Doesn't make sense to have to put the key on to have the light go on when you open the door or to turn on flashers or beep the horn.Have checked the wiring diagram but the brown wire has so many interconections on its way to the fuse box that it is nearly impossible to figure out.Do others out there have power to the purple wires without the ignition on?(ie.do the passenger compartment lights or gove box lights operate without the key in the igmition? Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I'm on my way out and I just saw your post. Stick around and some of the usual suspects will be back to post answers for you.

I'll check back later tonight when I get home.

Again, welcome....

Hi buzz2234, welcome and yes the interior, flashers and horns all have power when the switch is off, but so do the brown ones and the white ones at the fuse box just when the batt. is connected. So now you know why we disconnect the batt. or have a quick disconnect switch when we let them set for periods of time.

Welcome Buzz to the wacky wiring world of Triumphs.
You will probably also be introduced to the many fine
short cuts and use of baling wire, speaker wire, K-mart
wire, staples and paper clips all installed by that
person we have come to fondly refer to as the DPO-
(Darned Previous Owner)

Hang around, a lot of good knowledge here.

white at the fuse box should be switched with the ignition or you would be able to turn on heater fan ,wipers , turn signals etc. without the key in the ignition. But the brown at the fuse box seems like it should be straight thru to power so you can run interior lights without key in when you open a door.Maybe somebody switched wire positions on the back of the ignition switch at one time.Is there straight thru positions(unswitched power out spots) on the back of the ignition switch?

That was my first thought also, but after looking at the wiring diagram that DNK linked, for the '73 TR6, the brown wire is the one that feeds the ignition switch. There is no pass through, and it dosen't appear that the brown feed for the purple wires on the fuse box is connected at the ignition switch. It looks like a seperate connection.

It seems that the PO has done some creative re-wiring. You are going to have to back track with a volt meter. If it turns out that the white wire is feeding both the green and purple circuits, that's just way too much current to be handled by that wire. Look to see if the brown and white are jumped together somewhere. Most likely at the fuse box. If it is, remove that, and then look to see where the brown wire lost it's connection to the battery.

You mean like DPO Pedro changing all his wires to
K-mart 32 ga, all black??? And then wrapping the
whole mess in black plastic tape!

Figuring out DPO wiring short cuts can be a real challenge.
