TR6 TR6 windscreen and rear flat black

I know from time to time, there is discussion of the black paint on the windscreen frame and the rear panel. I always pondered whether it was flat or satin black.

This weekend, I started to recondition my windscreen frame, and there it was, the original paint.

So I can now say with authority that the windscreen and rear panel were originally painted in flat black.

But most of you probably already knew that.

My first inclination was to spray these areas in satin black, but now I will be going with the original paint scheme of flat black on a Mallard Blue car.

I find it interesting that once again, the Triumph designers were ahead of their time. The use of flat black to offset the gloss of the body paint is now in vogue. Many new high end cars are now presented with offsetting or complete flat paint schemes. The trend among the custom car crowd is also going with flat paints.

Now to decide if I use a flat clear or a flat urethane, or some other product. Decisions, decisions, it never ends.

I like the satin black around the windscreen because it's easier to clean up when you get rubber dressing on the seal that's around the glass and under the frame.

My mistake I used Krylon Tough Coat Semi Flat Black on the frame. I used the type of paint you find on the Mustang Mach 1 on the rear of the car. They used a semi flat back on the hood also. Very low sheen but easy to clean up.

the reason they used flat black was it make the back of the car appear wider, optical delusion

That, and also to hide the effect of all the soot and oil from the exhaust splattering onto the back of the car!
