TR6 TR6 wheel centers

Hello Everyone,
The PO that worked on the wheel centers on the hubcaps apparently couldn't find the corrrect nuts. For two of these he decided to use something close - metric nuts. The nuts were all jammed on so tight that they stripped the studs of course. I want to put on new studs, but I can not figure out how the studs were attached. it almost looks like they were pressed or welded from the inside. Any suggestions?

They are usually pressed in. You should be able to bang them out though if you are careful.

The lazy PO of my 69TR was driving around with 3 studs snapped off. I ordered 4 new studs. The broken studs banged out easily with a hammer and small cold chisel. My local tire store used a special lug nut and an air driven wrench to "pull" the new studs into place. Charged me $5.00 per stud installed. Not bad.

Where did you order the studs from? How did you go about removing the old ones? I can't see any lines underneath the decal - does the chrome hide it?

I think Tinster is talking about wheel studs.

Kevin, are you referring to the the 'TR6' badge on the hub cap?

I've never actually taken mine apart, haven't had the need, but if the 'chrome' part is actually plastic the threaded section could be molded into it.

Yes, I am refering to the TR6 badge on the hub cap. The piece I am talking about is about 2 3/4" across. It is metal and has a red and silver TR6 sticker in the center. Ever try to repair these?

I've wondered how those come apart. I just bought a set of 4 spare center hubs, less the top caps that you speak of, on ebay which I'm going to have chrome plated. I think that it will look great with the polished stainless trim rings and new center caps on top. Now I have to decide whether to keep the road wheel silver or paint it black or even yellow to match the car.

These could look like the similar trimmed and center capped wheels used on the 69-70 Z-28's that matched the body color or were in black.

Nope, never tried to take them apart. New stickers are available though. Give it a go and let us know.

Sorry for the blnder Kevin,

Yes, I was referring to to the wheel studs. The hubcaps on my 69TR were all cracked and glued together with mailing tape on the insides for added strength!! A few compression springs missing as well.

The TR6 emblems looked original and in fair condition. I drenched the small nuts in DW-40 and salvaged all 4 emblems. I'm not sure how the studs are attached. A shame- I had a wheel off this past Friday installing the 2nd of the new rear coil springs. I could have looked for you.

My grey wheel paint is in poor condition. I have the chrome rings installed and am also thinking about having the wheels painted red to match the car paint. I have the black plastic hubcaps.

Should look nice.....once my soundly dead 69TR decides to rise like a Phoenix and head for the mountain roads here on the island.

Please someone? Eventually I will run out of broken and/or buggered up components that must be replaced and the car will actually start and run more than 2 miles without breaking down???? Right?? Some day?? Please tell me this will eventually take place.

I'm kinda in the dumps about the TR today.

Yes Tinster, your TR6 will actually run well someday after you invest a lot of TLC into her.
