Yeah, alan, I removed the drum too and every thing is in place. I didn't put a socket on the nuts but the hub looked like it was flush and even against the trailing arm. I guess I should go back and check the torque. If I'm rained out tomorrow ( we're digging a hole for an inground pool). I'll do that. Thanks
 
Hey, Tom. I enjoyed reading about your recent odyssey.
I can say for sure that it is not faster than the wheel rotation. I'm having trouble making out if it is matching the wheel. It has a regular pattern, that does seem to increase with speed.
If I slow down it goes away and usually only returns after making a turn , but not every time I make a turn.
Maybe, I can get my wife to come along and look over the side and see if she can tell. I could put a chalk mark on the tire to help her judge. That ought to work. I'll get back here after I give that a try.

Dry u-joints can sometimes make these noises, especially under differing loads.

Are the trailing arm studs all secure and tightened down? Just a thought that's probably not it, but if drums come off, worth checking.
 
Thanks Paul. I only looked at the attachment to the trailing arms and the hubs looked like they were flush against the t/a. Tomorrow, I'll take the drum off and check for tightness with a socket. I have been warned about overtightening and stripping the aluminum so I'll be careful with that.
I guess after all that has been eliminated, there's not much else to consider but the U- joints, right?

OK. I'm back. We had a break in the rain so I went for a test drive again.
I decided to try to aggrivate the situation to see if I could get a more consistant symptom. I believe it worked. I made a few circles in a parking lot and when I straightened out, I played with the throttle to make the car jerk. Kind of like when you first learn how to drive a standard transmission. Got a metallic click and a chirping sound that was in time with the wheel turning.
Doesn't that sound more like a U- joint?
BTW, about a half mile before I got home the odo turned to 00000. I was planning a little ceremony for that.
Looks like the shaft will come out and I'll hold off the ceremony until it goes back in.
I do feel relieved;at least I'll be taking some action instead of having anxiety over the unknown.
In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions or hints, I'd appreciate and welcome it.
 
Seems likely that is what the problem is. Somewhere I have pictures of the u-joints I replaced when I had my engine out. There were no symptoms, I just did it because they were handy to do at the time. I was surprised at the amount of wear I found when they were apart.
 
I've got a NAPA, an Advanced Auto, an Auto Zone and an O'Rileys nearby. Do you think I can find what I need at any of these?
