TR6 TR6 Tire Size

What's the best tire size for a TR6? The LBC shop owner told me 195R75-15, but the guy I bought the car from (who owns two other TR6's) told me 205R75-15 because they 'handle' better.

I've found that the 205's are easier to find - i.e., cheaper.

As I stated in a previous posting a while back, original sized (195) tires for the 6 are impossible to find at local tire dealers. Buying from a mail-order tire store is quick, easy and cost-effective. 205's on stock rims are about as wide as you can go with the wheel width. Actually, you are better off with 195's especially on a rainy pavement: less lateral sliding, believe it or not. Unless of course you go for an ultra-high performance tire that works well on wet pavement. Then that defeats the idea of "cheap".

I am running Pirelli P4000's on Panasports and my nuts draw up when I am running on slick, wet pavement. But let it be hot and dry and I can lift a wheel without raising my blood pressure.

Cain: I've got a TR4A and a TR250. I've got the 205's on the TR4A without any problems, so my bet is that the TR6 will be fine. The only issue to be careful of is making sure that the rims you use are at least 5.5in. Some of the older rims are only 4.5in. and they won't handle the tire width.

Why is it that the domestic stock tire for the TR6(in Britain) is a 165SR15....or more commonly known as a Volkswagen Bug Tire?

I think that it is a matter of different cultures. People in the U.S. are used to seeing street rods & race cars with wide tires & tend to equate the same with performance no matter what the car is used for. Also it is cosmetic, wide tires just look cool.

Last time I ordered red lines was from Coker Tire. They actually had Michelins at the time. I did a quich search and they don't list TR-6 stock tires but I'd give them a call anyway.

I did some research a while back and found that a 205x70x15 will have the same diameter as the original 185x80x15 and therefore you would have no speedometer calibration issues.
Although, 205x75x15 wouldn't give you too much problems.
 
I just bought a pair of the Michelin 185SR-15X for the '76 TR6 from Coker. These are the specified size per the Repair Operation Manual. The local garage was able to get teh inner tubes for them.

For all the ill press these tires get, I still prefer the look of these original Red Lines.

Besides, the first set has lasted 75,000 miles. The rear tires on the car are still the originals.
