I have read some post about replacing timing cover seal. I am currently fixing an oil leak, I thought was a timing cover seal but once I remove every thing it appears it is the timing cover gasket. If your planning on doing this repair here is what I went through so far.
remove carboard shield. remove radiator, unbolt steering rack, remove fan, remove harmonic balancer. pull off timing cover, seal was not bad but gasket was the problem of leaking oil, apply new gasket, install new seal why not if you have gone this far. make jig to hold timing tensior to reinstall timing cover, make sure you unbolt water pump it took me 1 hour to figure out the water pump is in the way when reinstalling the timing cover, drink a beer, cuss a lot, losen water pump, install timing cover, insert spacer with bevel out WRONG do it again, get it right this time, bevel toward engine, drink a beer again, well its not finished but i think the oil leak will end after the fix, but I am sure that was the protective coating that kept the frame from rotting. hopefully reverse everthing directions and it will run.

I got every thing back together this morning, sand blasted all the parts and painted them too, It stopped leaking oil, oooo but I have not cranked it yet

What does cranking it and leaking oil have to do with each other?

I'm getting ready to start this project, but no one has mentioned anything about the sterring rack. Why did you unbolt it?

Bill, if he hasn't cranked it yet, there is no oil flying around inside the timing cover to proof test the fix.

With the car on stands (wheels off ground), unbolting the rack and wiggling the unit forward will give you more room to work.
The wheels will just toe in a bit when you do this. It just bolts right back in place.

Thanks Bill.. Just curious, Is it absolutely necessary or just a nice thing to do?
