TR6 TR6 thrust washer question

I have read a lot of info on the dreaded thrust washers on TR6's and my question is, should you replace the thrust washers periodically? Just to be sure that they dont wear and fall out and do damage? I purchased a std and .005 over size set from TRF, I think my oil pan gasket needs to be replace and I figured since I had the pan off might as well replace the thrust washers too... thoughts are welcomed, I have a lot of free time
 
Depends on how long the thrust washers have been in and more importantly, if they show signs of wear. You will need a dial gauge to see how much wear there is. This can be done without any disassembly. Affix the dial gauge to the front of the engine and set the gauge to read off the crank pulley. The pulley can be moved with a piece of 1x2 wood, both ways, or moved back and engage the clutch to release forward, or something to that effect. It's been a while since I replaced mine. Don't be too surprised if you have wear and find that stock-sized washers are all you need. I had wear on mine and went out and bought all kinds of sizes, thinking there was unusual wear. Ended up only being able to put stock thrust washers back in. Have checked ever so often since and find no noticeable wear. Make sure that if you change them, you have a good access to a high quality torque wrench to re-bolt your bearing caps. Guesswork here is not a good thing.
 
I have tried to check them with a magnetic indicator and cannot get it any where to read the wear, PITA, I just figured I would replace them, and I do have a 1/2 torque wrench
 
I changed mine since I was in there doing rod/main bearings, probably a good practice to change them if you've got a fair bit of mileage on there anyway.
There was not a lot of wear on the old ones and I could only use std size ones on replacement.
Best places to use the dial test indicator are directly on the crankshaft counterweights but of course the pan must be off first to access.
If you do change the thrust washers be very careful to install them the right way around or you will wear the crankshaft very quickly.
