TR6 steering rack rebuild questions

Hello,

I recently had to rebuild my steering rack. It was just about as much to have TRF rebuild as it was for the parts, so I had them do it. The outer tie rods were shot, and I wasn't sure about the inner tie rods. The pinion gear was so loose that I could spin it with my fingers. Now it is much tighter - I have to attach the union to get it to turn. I have two questions: 1)Do you normally have to add any oil to the pinion after it is rebuilt? 2)The pinion doesn't turn real smooth. I can feel the pinion mesh as it turns with the rack - is this normal? I am hoping to have this car up and running this weekend after almost a year of sitting in my garage, and I don't feel like waiting to contact TRF next week. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Re: TR6 steering rack rebuild questions

I have torn apart, inspected, cleaned, greased and reassembled 3 steering racks in the last two weeks. I have found that when I reassemble the racks (if nothing is badly worn) I have found that I too find the splined steering stub is tight and I need to slip on a U-joint and turn the steering. If you find the stub loose, you will need to disassemble and reshim your stub shaft. Just for general information some of the thing that I have found out about Triumph rack and pinions. Spitfire, TR-4, Tr-6s all use the same rack, In having bought about 25 in the last 2 years from known cars, I can find no differences. All but one has been 3 and 1/2 turns. I have only found one 2 and 1/2 turn rack from a late Spitfire. The 2 and 1/2 rack that Moss sells is not made like regular Triumph racks, I removed a boot and it appears that the inner tie rods can not be removed or rebuilt. I put Rack and Pinion steering on TR-3s and have to be able to remove the inner tie rods to shorten them. This is my obsevation. Good luck, Bill C. Mesa, Az
