Nearly all cars have the filters in a vertical position for a reason. I can't say that it is for sludge containment at the bottom, but there is a definite reason.

Now you would think that after all of these years I would know exactly why, but I must have been sleeping through that class. All I know is that during my apprenticeship, I changed a thousand or more and they were all vertical, with the exception of that stupid original TR6 cannister.

Those were designed to really mess with the owners heads and nothing else was good about them.

Oh I don't know, I can name several cars that came from the factory with horizontal spin on filters. From Ford, Honda, Nissan, General Motors, Volkswagen... Especially from the mid-early eighties. Ferrari's often have vertical filters, but the entrance to the filter is at the bottom so there is no settling of sludge via gravity in those. Though Ferrari's tend to be drysumped engines too.

Ever tried to change the oil filter on a 2.8l V6 S-10 truck or Blazer? How about an early eighties Escort? Late eighties 300ZX? All hateful locations for a filter. Cursed the engineers everytime. Too much time working in fastlubes as a lad. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Of all the cars I've owned in the last 37 years or so, only one has had the filter in a completely vertical position. And it was a remote-mounted canister (on an American car no less) !

I guess my early GM experience got me. 60's and 70's engines were nearly all mounted in the right rear of the engine and were vertical. Now were they exactly perpendicular to the block? Possibly not, but they favored vertical more than the TR6 version of the cannister, so that is what I referred to in my comments.

Now that I think of it, the old GM six cylinder was side mounted as well and favored the horizontal mount. I certainly should have remembered those.

By the time the eighties came, I was pushing paper through the shop and not turning wrenches anymore.

Sigh......

It's tough getting old.....

Vertical, horizontal, it does not matter once pressurized.

However, the vertical filter will minimize the amount of oil that drains back to the sump when the engine is shutdown. A trait that minimizes the time it takes to pressurize the engine on startup.

My TR6, Honda, and Nissan truck all have horizontal filters.
