I took my dash apart and am still reassembling everything. I have really appreciated the suggestions for the various problems I have run into. My next problem concerns the speedometer cable. My speedometer worked before I removed it. My speedometer cable seems to turn freely. When I disconnect it from my transmission and leave it connected to the speedometer and turn the cable by hand, the speedometer shows movement. However, when I hook the speedometer cable back to the transmission, nothing happens when I drive it. What could I be doing wrong?

Depending on the year of your car, you could have a plastic gear that drives the speedo. They tend to strip if the speedo hangs up in any way.
The gear is found at the transmission end of the cable. There is a set screw/bolt that holds the bearing in position. The driven gear is behind the bearing.

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago when I installed
a new speedo cable. Everything functioned until I
plugged it into the tranny.

In my case, I did not have enough cable end (inside
spinning shaft)into the tranny to engage the gears.

As soon as I pulled about 3/8" additional internal cable
toward the tranny side and fitted it back in, the speedo
worked just fine.

This sound like your case. Give it a try.
