TR6 TR6 rocker assembly questions

Those 2 bent push rods concern me. I think there may be more to this.

You could be right, but there was a lot of binding going on, and the possibility that the actual valve lash was set way large (due to the binding). A judgement call, I agree. But if it were my engine, I would at least try the old rocker assembly before pulling the head off to check the valve stems & guides. Wouldn't hurt to squirt some penetrating oil on the valve stems while the shaft is off, since they are certainly too dry at this point.

And for long-term, yes, I would have RAS go over the mess and see what they can make out of it. A quick check of prices @ TRF shows that 7 rockers & a shaft will set you back over $200, which ISTR is more than I paid RAS to rebuild my (4 cylinder) shaft. Of course that was a few years back, so their price may have gone up. But that way, they check out all the rockers to be sure they are OK, plus I believe they will rebush them to better than new. It's at least worth giving them a call, IMO. There was clearly something wrong with the rocker assembly, but at this point you don't know if the rockers were bored undersize or the shaft was too large (in addition to the holes being in the wrong place).

Also, while it is a long shot, I'd still give BPNW a call and ask if they can help. I've never had a problem with them myself, but I've heard that their customer service is excellent. And the shaft they supplied was clearly just as defective a year ago as it is today, the problem is just a bit more obvious now!

Finally some good news. I put the old rocker assembly on, adjusted the valves, and cranked up the engine. It started right away and I can see oil coming from each of the holes in top of each rocker this time. I didn't see oil coming from the holes on my new rocker assembly. As soon as the rain breaks, I will be taking it out for a test drive.

Randall, I don't know what to ask for to be fair. Would I ask for a replacement shaft and seven rockers? I guess I feel like it is mostly my problem for not inspecting the parts to begin with. Had I done this, I could have just returned the part. To be fair, I will give them a call.

No matter how this goes, I just wanted to thank all of you for all your help.
I will report back after my first test drive.

Kevin

Kevin, BPNW are good people . Just call and talk to them.
See what they will do.

Test drive successful! I will recheck the valves tomorrow to be sure. I have a little tweeking with the timing and carbs tomorrow. It started raining as soon as I was ready to drive, normally a good sign for me. I called BPNW and they were very friendly. The owner will be calling me back tomorrow, but after talking to them and comparing the shafs more carefully, I don't think there was anything wrong with the shaft after all. My guess is that somehow the oil port to the rocker assembly was blocked initially. Unfortunately I did not know to check this and a number of other things. Sure leared a lot. Thanks again for all your help.
Kevin
