From you title, it looks like you may be the person to ask a few more questions, I hope you dont mind. I am doing an off the frame restoration and I would like to know if the trailing arms or rear shock bodies were originally painted black?

firstly, the hub is usually very tight on the stub axle taper.
You run a serious risk of damaging your hub using any standard puller or press. You need an adapter that bolts to the drum face of the hub using the wheel studs to secure it. I use a strong two leg puller which I attach to this adapter to split them.
The hub has a collapsible spacer between the two bearings, which needs to be replaced when you come to assembly. You will need a dial indicator and carefully tighten the back nut until you have a backlash of between 2 to 4 thou. Be very steady tightening up as if you go too far then you need another spacer and try again.
If the hubs feel smooth to turn, leave them alone.
