I used the external oil line on my TR6 for years, with an aluminum valve cover with no problems. That was on a high mileage original engine with standard Strombergs. When I built the performance engine with the increased compression, triple Strombergs and roller rockers, I kept the external oil line, on the advice of Richard Good to provide extra oil for the roller rockers. Only then did I have a problem with the excess oil fumes and splash making it out of the valve cover and being pulled through the carbs. Switched back to a stock steel valve cover with the baffle and element and that problem disappeared.
Another solution that some have applied is a catch tank/seperator with an oil return line to the sump.
FWIW, I used the external line on my original TR6 engine for over 40K miles and there was over 110K miles on the engine when I added it. When I tore down that engine for rebuild to install in a kit car and inspected the bearings there was non evidence of any form of oil starvation on the bottom end from having the external line on. Kas Kastner talks about it and on a race engine that lives it life at higher rpm that could very well be true, but on a street engine that even saw quite a few track days and was revved to 4500rpm on a regular basis it was not the case on my engine. When I took that engine out of my TR6 and installed the performance engine, it had nearly 160K miles on it and consumed/leaked less than 1/2 a quart of oil every 3000 miles, and that was with the external oil line on it.
