Is the trip odometer reset cable removable from the back of the speedometer and how ?


I bought a hopefully-more-accurate speedometer at a flea market but it doesn't have a odometer reset cable and I'd like to use the one off the car.
 
I bought a reset cable from a club member and as easy as it is to install, removing it according to him was not so simple. I believe he said it was necessary to open the case..
Hang on someone knowing more will come along.
