TR6 TR6 Maybe

Ran down a 71 TR6 for sale. Going to look at it in the next day or so. Owner says it's in great shape with soft and hard tops. Only rusty spot is a concern to me. He says it's on the panel behind the drivers door even with the door handle and that it's not a hole but just surface rust. Sounds kind of fishy to me! Not knowing as much as I probably should about TR's what should I look for. I'm very well educated on MGB's so I have a idea on some stuff to look for.

Sounds like kind of an odd place for rust. May just be surface rust... where the paint has worn off(?).

Check the rockers and inner sills for rust. Kind of hard to do with the car on the ground, but the worst spots typically seem to be near the front lower fender area (directly behind the front wheels). Check the floor pans of course. And I'm not sure about the TR6s, but I know of TR4s, the area along the seam between the two inner wheel arch pieces is prone to rust. You need a flashlight to view this from the trunk area (on a TR4 anyway - I know the truck deck configuration is a little different on the TR6).

One final word of caution from a TR owner... the rust you find on your initial inspection will in all likelihood only represent about 10-15% of the total rust damage on the car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good luck!

look closely at the frame right behind the rocker panal directly in front of the rear wheels. That is where the swing arms mount, and where it seems the frames rot first. It's a very common problem.
