TR6 TR6 Jamming in reverse !

I have a 1973 2.5PI, Had it since 1978. No problems at all, until last month. I was driving up and down my drive to warm the engine up. After about 4 'laps' I tried to put it into reverse and it seemed to just jam. The engine was still running, but the car never moved. It was really jammed in. I dropped the clutch a few times and finally it popped out. I drove it for 10 miles and all seemed ok, no horrible noises etc. Back home when I put it in reverse, it did it again. I managed to get it unstuck and is now in my garage.

I work in the Middle East 4 on 4 off and over the winter, I have done very little milage due to all the snow.

Is the problem just lack of use or something more sinister, like a selector gone, or worse a kog knackered ?

Any advice please, would be most welcome. Thanks Spikey

You have overdrive? If so it may be engaged and if so it would give you similar symptoms.

Hi TR4 nut,

Yes I have overdrive, 2,3 and 4. I am positive that it wasn't in overdrive though.
Thanks for the advice. :thankyousign:

Not my expertise, but I thought that the IRS setup in the back can sometimes bind as well - if that is right someone else can chime in.

Checking the selector fork would mean taking the top cover off the gearbox which is simple. The pain is taking out the dash support and gearbox cover to get to it.

Check the reverse switch in the top cover. Sometimes the ball can jamb the shift rods in the top cover. Ask me how I know...

Hi,

I had a similar problem many years ago. Was having trouble with getting in and out of 1st gear and reverse. The problem was a leaking clutch master cylinder. So the first thing to check is that you have enough fluid in the clutch master.

Cheers
