TR6 TR6 J-type OD stuck engaged

OK, ok. Yes, I guess I left the OD engaged when I last drove the car in the fall. Yes, I know that is a particularly dumb thing to have done. And yes, I know that this is the sort of thing that happens if you have too many cars and are a dope. Agree on all the points - grin.

So with that out of the way, tips and ideas on fixing it?

Thanks

Tom,

Unless you left the car in 3rd or 4th gear which I would think is pretty unlikely then the overdrive should have been disengaged due to the lockout switches (or at least when I park a car, it's usually almost always in 1st). Also, even if you had left it in 3rd or 4th with the overdrive engaged when you parked it, I would have expected any pressure to have bled off and disengaged the overdrive clutch as well (Randall?).

Are you sure you don't have an electrical issue instead keeping it engaged?

Scott

:iagree:

The brake ring is visible as a dark stripe around the body of the OD. Try rapping on it, first with a soft-face hammer and then, if that doesn't work, a BFH. Also remove the test plug to check that there isn't any pressure trapped inside. If still no joy, support the rear suspension, and run the engine in gear long enough to thoroughly warm things up; then rap on the brake ring some more.

Now I'd triple-check that it is really stuck in OD, maybe burn a little incense and sacrifice the cat; before removing the OD & gearbox for repair.

Hi Scott - agree, it appears I did leave it engaged. Dumb dumb dumb. That is what I get for racing into the garage in 2nd gear.

Thanks Randall, I'll follow that sequence and if all else fails, go buy a cat.

Huh? Wouldn't the solenoid disengage the moment you switch off the engine? Or does the OD having to be turning to disengage?

I'll confess I have never paid attention to this as I am unlikely to be driving through my neighborhood but it could happen as I always park with the shifter in second, not first (someone must have told me once that was better).

Oh, on a J-Type it think it would have had to have been in 3rd or 4th... you really do come into the garage area pretty hot.

Yes, the solenoid should release as soon as the key is off, which should disengage the OD. The OD does not have to be turning. I seriously doubt that parking the car with the switch on had anything to do with the OD sticking.

But that doesn't change whether it is stuck or not.

Just curious, how do you know the OD is stuck on?

Hi guys. So maybe I am not quite the dope I thought (Rich C - be quiet)

Randall, it started to bind when trying to reverse and the switch not actuating.

Can you think of what else would have those symptoms?

If it is in OD -- stuck solenoid?

But some experimentation with the wheels off the ground might determine if the binding is because you have full-time OD or some other issue.

OK - took her out for a test drive this AM. Was able to reverse without any odd symptoms, but only tried for a couple of feet just in case.

Around 2800 +/- RPM at 60 MPH, around 3150+/- at 70 which suggests the OD is engaged.

Noticed my fuel and coolant temp gauges are dead, not getting proper power at the fuse box which explains why the OD switch isn't effecting anything. No blown fuses, so that suggests ignition switch issue right? This can probably wait to later however. [EDIT] - have power there now and at lead from OD switch, connections just needed to be cleaned.

After driving her (much fun btw) for around 25 minutes tapped on the black ring on the OD assembly. Went to back up and immediate bucking in reverse.

OK - out for a drive again and it released. It will flick into/out of OD as it should now. Cool.

No cool - fuel pump just stopped working so I had to jog home so I could take my daughter to Girl Scouts. They are looking for bugs today - fun.
