TR6 TR6 Horn only works when key is off

Bill there should be a bare steel braided wire that goes through the coupling connecting top to bottom

Yes Don, That braided wire is there in the coupling. Since my jumper wire sounds the horn, I figured the braider wire has a bad connection at one end or the other, maybe just needs cleaning??

The only problem I've had with the horn has always been traced to dirty or carbonized contact surfaces on horn brush and the slip ring. I have to spray a solvent "in the vicinity" and turn the steering wheel back and forth half dozen times to clean them up.
When I return home, those are two areas I will check. Bought new horn brush, when I turn the wheel it squeaks. My smallest problem.

TR6 1974, stock. Horns work when the key is not inserted or inserted but ignition not turned on. Installed new horn relay, new horns (prior only passenger horn worked, very weak), and new horn button. Also, cleaned connections, steering rack ground. Read your prior posting on if lights worked with ignition on, will check.

This could be associated problems. I had an oil problem March, pressure went to zero. Had garage install pump and stainless steel tubing from block to gauge. I am getting old to work in driveway during the winter. Gauge reads pressure But I have oil leak under dash. View from dash trays hole and pass. Well looks like tube make 90 degree bend and area around back of gauge has oil. Read that new Ss threads on old gauge threads could be problematic. Purchased nylon tube. To be installed. Several oil wires behind dash have oil on then. Have had the courage to remove the dash and check yet. Note, purchased HD valve for oil pressure valve. Catalog said oil pressure would be higher. These were before and after, start 90, then 100. Running 55-70, then 15 minutes to lower from 100 to 75. When I got home I replaced with original spring. Now I have normal pressure. Wondering if oil on wire could short out?

If you could lead me in a direction on either problem I would be internally grateful. Ron

I'd get the leak fixed, Ron, but that's not contributing to the horn problem.

The best advise is to check the grounds first for any electrical issue. My first Tr3 would flash the headlamps when I stepped on the brakes.
Bad grounding in the tail lamps No Kidding !

Oil is a good insulator. It won't short anything electrical.

Weird problems like this are often caused by bad grounds. If two components share a ground connection, and it comes loose or otherwise won't conduct, the second component can create a current path to the first under some conditions. The wiring diagram is often no help, as it may not show all the ground connections. The bad ground, as MD suggests, could be anywhere.

This might be a message that it is time to clean up the wiring!

I just bought this TR6 with 72000 miles on it, got it registered and now I need to get it inspected...among other things.
The car came with an after market steering wheel and now I have problems with its horn. Horn works when the engine is not running. Turn the key to first click and the horn doesn't work. Anyone run into this problem before??
Thanks in advance.
