Hello Everyone,

I need some advice/information on my heater system. I am thinking of removing the heater box this summer since I have to work on my cooling sytem anyway. So, 1)How much heat do these heaters put out when they are working properly? Presently I can barely feel any heat coming out of my heater vents. 2)The heater motor has a high pitched sqeal when operating; it seems to work most of the time. Is it a simple job to just oil the shaft and clean the brushes, or is it just better to buy a new motor? Who carries the best motor if I need a new one? 3)If I take apart and paint the heater box, does it need any kind of seal kit, and if so, who carries one? Any other suggestions?

I purchased a heater core from TRF, which is smaller than the original and a new motor,put everything back together and not real happy with it,when the fan is on no air seems to blow out of the vents, if you take the fan blades off the motor be very careful,there is a shoulder on the shaft and if you slam the fan back on you will break it, dont ask how I know... I since purchased a used box on ebay, had the heater core repaired for 60.00 and took the original motor apart and cleaned everything and greased the bearings, sand blasted the case painted it and put it back together, buy some foam tape about 1/4 wide to seal it. and now it awaits me putting the second rebult heater box back in, As far as how much heat they put out, mine does well in the winter when its comming out the bottom of the box, I guess Floor mode, the fan doesnt help but that might be another problem I caused, take some of the gauges out and the glove box, it will be easier to get to the bolts on the bulk head
 
Kevin , Redid mine and tested it with a battery charger. I ended up buying a new motor because I got a little zealous taking the old one apart. Is it the air flow you lack or is it the heat? 2 different problems I'm sure your aware.

Hey guys, thanks for the compliments! If you don't seal the heater case itself, (top to the sides and bottom) when you put it back together with the stripping that I show below, it will blow air out of the housing in all direction, not (up) at defrost or (down) at heat.

Think of the box as a plenum chamber, that will open at the bottom to allow heat out to the floor and when the bottom damper is closed, all air flow is forced to the defrosters or vents. Close vents and all goes to defroster outlets. BUT....the case must be sealed, see first pic for look at old seals on inside of top cover. Yes, put the strip along the front edge as well.

The heat does not blow out of the dash vents. The Brits call these the fresh air vents. Heated air only goes out the bottom or through the windshield demisters. To maximize the volume of heated air entering the car you have to close all of the eye ball vents including the ones in the foot wells. When the vents are closed all of the incoming air passes over the heater core, the amount of heat is tremendous! Mine puts out enough heat to roast your feet!
 
Yep, that is the way they work.

The only time I had a problem with heat was when I spent a winter in below freezing temps. The heater never worked. No heat. A month or so into the winter, I got heat by replacing the 165 degree summer thermostat the the standard 180 degree one. When spring came, I switched them for summer driving. From then on, never an overheating problem in summer, nor freezing my butt off in winter.
 
OOPS....My mistake. I keep forgetting that the two outlets on the sides are for the defrosters, not the dash vents.
