Where in the heck are you in RI? I thought that I knew just about every TR6 owner in this little slice of heaven.

I ended up buying a new motor from Moss. TRF was out at the time mine was apart. I've since bought two used boxes with heater cores and motors off ebay that I plan to disassemble, powder coat and rebuild. I'll keep one complete as a spare and probably sell the other. I'll more than likely have to replace the motors, even though they are "supposed" to work properly.

And for all of the effort to get it in and out, you definitely want to be sure what's going back in is perfect.

EDIT: I just remembered that I took mine to Yankee Auto Electric in Pawtucket to have it checked, since it too burned up. The owner, Brad is a great guy and rebuilt my starter and alternator overthe past two years. Brad said that parts are no longer available for these motors, which is why I bought new. If he couldn't rebuild it, I didn't trust anyone else.

thanks a lot brosky! i live in east greenwich down by the showcase cinema. i hope to have mine on the road by spring/early summer. i was afraid of not being able to get any parts to rebuild the motor. i will give that a shot to get mine rebuilt. my heater core looks good but im thinking i should maybe just replace it too since, as you said its a pain in the butt to get that heater core out. btw i know eric from her majesty's service back from when he used to work for bill mack. i dont know if you know of him out in bristol, but anyway thanks for the help!

I am curious. To rebuild the motor for your heater, you will have to take the fan blade off the shaft. You do know that that is impossible without breaking it. Period. So you are faced with the dilemma for replacing the fan blade. They aren't available new, yet. I found one NOS from a forum member last year. I was lucky. New motors are available from TRF (and probably the other vendors), Rimmer has talked about offering a squirrel cage fan (don't think that is available yet, might be worth checking), or check Ebay for a NewOldStock
fan.

hey brosky, this is a bit off topic but i saw your website and i noticed you had your car painted. i need to get mine painted and i was wondering how much the paint job cost you? im just trying to get a ballpark figure. thanks! and i had no idea that the heater fan will be destroyed when i take this apart......what a headache! in the trf catalog it lists a heater fan so maybe they are making this part again now since you had to deal with this tr6bill.

I did manage to get my plastic fan off the motor spindle and back on in one piece though I agree you have to be very careful and use PB Blaster to lubricate it.
I might have been lucky at the time and not realized it.

Bill. Funny, mine came right off. It was held in place by something that looked like a speed nut.

OK, first the heater. Bill is correct about destroying the fan blade. I was able to get the heater motor and fan from Moss. TRF has them listed, but didn't have any in August. That may have changed by now.

I don't think that the squirrel cage ever went anywhere.

Please do yourself a favor and have the core at least checked by a good radiator shop. If any doubts, now is the time to replace it. Also, get the new hoses for inside the car as well as the connector pipes to the hoses on the engine side of the car. There is a seal that you want to get for that as well.

Ebay blower motors are very iffy and if you compare the price between a new with warranty, versus 30+ years old, it's no less expensive to buy new, considering the labor to pull it out. And TEST it BEFORE you install it.

Erik is a good friend and does all of the work that my old sore back will not allow me to do. He is the best that I've ever known for these cars.

My car was not recently painted, just the engine compartment, trunk and door jambs. The paint was redone in 1985 because of fading and the job was great on the outside, but the painter didn't do the above mentioned detail areas. I had no rust, just faded paint and wanted to improve the looks of the car.

Every paint job is different depending on the condition of the car as well as the type of job that you want done. I would recommend Alan at A&E in Pawtucket. he is the only guy that works on mine, as you can see from the site. There are others that are good, but not a mile and a half away from me. Besides, he's a good friend and I trust him completely. His shop is spotless and he is fussy as can be. Drive it up and get an estimate.

AltaKnight and DNK are the first two guys on the planet to get the fan blade off a TR6 fan motor shaft without breaking it. Heck, I even broke a brand new one while putting it on! Thank goodness it is Bakelite and guys that restore antique Bakelite radios have tricks for repairing that stuff. I used ultra-thin cyanoacrylate cement and JBWeld. It ain't never coming off now.

My advice to anyone tackling a TR6 heater is to make everything new because they are a real headache to take out and put back. You only want to do this once in your life

I second that emotion Bill.
My knuckles are still scarred!

I restored my heater box a few months ago. My motor fan came off very easily, it is held on by a circlip. Getting the shaft out took a can of CRC and lots of new words I cannot say here. I got my heater box out complete in less than an hour. Maybe right hand drives are easy in this regard as there is plenty of room to manouvre it thru the passenger foot well.
Regards
Craig
