TR6 TR6 Headlight rims

Ok, I know this is probable trivial for most of you, but I can not figure out how to put the headlight rims on. Since my car was in boxes when I got it, I have never seen the headlights put together. There is one tab on the rim itself, but I don't see how that will hold it in place. I am wondering If I am missing a piece or something. I can't find any detailed pictures, so I don't know what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We can probably explain to you how to build an engine but I challenge anyone here on the forum to fully explain how to get those blasted rings to stay on. I finally resorted to installing the wire rock guards that has three spring clips to help hold the darn rings on.

Well, they don't just snap on. You sort of have to work them into place. How I put them on is sort of hard to explain but I will try.

I start with the tab at 1 or 11 o'clock, set it into position and then place my hands, palms open on the sides of the ring. Then I sort of pull down and push at the same time. Slightly distoring the ring and it slips on. Then rotate the tab to 12 o'clock. Then when I release the pressure and the ring returns to its normal shape the tension holds it in place.

I have noticed though that new replacement rings don't hold as well as the originals.

It does take a little practice. You also have to hold your tongue just so for it to really work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

They are one those pieces, that after you get them on correctly, you say to yourself, "I hope I NEVER have to take that off again". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif

I do mine much the same but with a little variation. I believe the molded pimple is to be at the top. In that position, the metal tab lines up with the claw clip on the headlight bucket.
I insert the tab into the clip and then work the rim into the lips of the bucket. Some go easier than others. Some tend to increase one's vocabulary.
 
Only thing to add here is if the ring goes on easy, chances are it isn't really on - give it a tug to make sure it doesn't pop right off. Otherwise it might fall off when when you don't notice, and then when you do notice you will want to say terrible things very loudly and then have to hunt for a replacement (or so I've been told!)

Lost a beauty ring on the way to a big car show sometime back.
Vowed that won't happen again. Here's my fix. Plus has cut down on rocks breaking my Cibie soda glass lenses. Screens not legal in all states.

OK, you guys are making me feel better. If it stops raining for a few minutes, I am going to check my headlight aim first, since it doesn't look like I will want to be removing those rings for long time. Doug and Shawn's methods seem to contradict each other, so I guess I will try it both ways. Doug's method puts the nipple at the top, and Shawn's directions show it 180 degrees out if I am reading the directions correctly. My car still has the old headlight gaskets with paint on it. I am going to try and strip off the paint first so the ring will slide better. Would using Si grease help or make it worse? Also, how do you find out if the screens are legal or not?

The molded nipples are at the top (12 o'clock) on my rings.
