TR6 TR6 Head off after 37 years

Well, I was sweating bullets over what it would cost to rebuild the original engine from my '73 that I had stored away around 1986. At the time I swapped out this engine with a TR250, I just assumed it was worn out. Well much to my surprise, I have no measurable ridge in any cylinder, nor do I have cylinder scoring. Some times things go right. I will still break it down and replace what is necessary, and I can now afford the GP2 cam.

Interesting to see how much carbon there was in there. Also the build up is severe in number 2 and 3 cylinders, less so in number 1 and 4, almost none in 5 and none in six.

It appears I was running the rear carburetor rich and the front one lean.

Thoughts?

All things considered, that motor looks pretty good.
By the way, what exactly are you using the hatchet for? I'm new to Triumphs and I know they require a few specialized tools, but a hatchet? :laugh:
 
Ray,

I would check the valves and valve guides in each of those carbon laden cylinders very carefully. That may be oil, not gas build up. Are you planning to do guides and seals as well?
 
Wow, for 37 years I'd say that looks pretty good!
 
Paul, yes the head is going in to be shaved (9-9.25 CR), hardened exhaust valve seats, and what ever else the machinist feels needs to be done. I was just tickled to death that I could take the over sized pistons and associated cylinder boring off my list. The slight ridge reaming and honing I can do, as well as new rings if so indicated. Likewise the bottom end will be a snap.

Once done, onto the frame, then body back on, then new door skins, then paint, then electrical, then final brake and fuel, the the wind screen, then the interior, then the hardtop, then.... it seems like it never ends.

Oh, add the carburetors, and distributor...

Probably the fuel pump too...
