A set of new front wheel bearings came with the car. They have the old style felt seal in them. The old seals on the car had the felt facing in towards the bearing. I installed them that way but it doesn't feel right at all. Really hard to get them in and they press right up against the inner bearing. It doesn't seem right. Upon tightening the nut, it felt like I was pressing something in as it didn't feel like it was tightening right. Loooking back, I can see where it they might mount w/ the felt side out as it has a place to run on. These things are supposed to face out, aren't they? Seeing these are quirky cars it wouldn't suprise me.

I don't have a manual yet and the instrucutons said nothing about it so your help would be deeply appreciated.
 
The felt goes towards the verticle link, not facing the bearing. The proper way to install is to leave felt seal off to get correct end play, then note location(orientation) of castle nut and then install felt seal on hub. If you put seal first on and then check endplay, you will get false reading. It's a pain, but you get endplay correct first time.

I just remembered I have a "Motor" repair manual from '79 that shows it. I knew it didn't feel right. They are probably ruined now anyway. Does anyone have a modern rubber replacement? I'm usuasly pretty good at feeling preload, that's how I figured they weren't in right.

I guess keeping these things running is more of a black art than a measure of skill or experience. They defy all manner of intutition or previous knowledge.

Quirkiest things I've ever seen, no wonder they all went out of business. :smirk:
 
I don't think there is a rubber equivilent, since the felt rides against the verticle link as apposed(sic)to sealing around the diameter of a shaft. Just be sure to thoroughly oil the felt with motor oil before installing.

P.S. the manual on amazon is a factory reprint, so yes it is the best.
 
Others have posted that they found a lip-type seal that would ride against the raised area on the vertical link. Personally I think the felt works very well, so I didn't save the information, sorry.

If I am reading the tea leaves correctly, the factory manual on Amazon is the 69-72 version. If your TR6 is later, you might want the later factory manual

I just did this job and had no luck with the felt seals. I substituted a lip seal from SKF. The number for it is SKF13612. Ordered from Motion Industries but I am sure others have it.
 
Got 'em off and they look like they will live. Soaking in oil right now.
