TR6 TR6 gearstick angles!

OK, here's maybe a strange question. In looking at photos of TR6 interiors, I've started noticing that some gearsticks are angled near to the horizontal, whereas others are angled near to the vertical.

Here's a photo of what I mean:

(Clearer, large version here: https://farm2.static.flickr.com/1228/1441474110_80d7349459_o.jpg )

These photos are taken from a few current Ebay auctions. The top three show the upright gearstick, the bottom three the more laid back gearstick (I'm assuming all cars are in Neutral, so I'm comparing oranges with oranges).

What is causing this difference? Are there two ways of attaching the gearstick to the transmission?

Earth shattering stuff, I know, but my curiosity has overcome my restraint about posting such a triviality /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

I believe they aren't all in neutral. The lower left photo in particular looks to be in reverse or maybe 4th to my eye. The top row looks to be in neutral.

There are no options in how the shift is attached, but there are numerous different shift levers that will fit and work. The TR3 lever, for example, is short and completely straight, making the shaft vertical when in neutral. It doesn't work well in a TR6 because the knob hits the dash, but fits just fine in a TR6 gearbox. TR4, TR4A each had their own shift levers; the Stag had two different ones. Probably other Triumphs as well (2000, 2.5, etc.). All will fit in a TR6 gearbox.

I've also seen several customized shift levers ... even without the expense of rechroming, the shift boot will hide a multitude of sins.

Randall - with a gearbox that is part TR3, part TR4, and part TR6 ... with a TR3 shift lever.

Thanks Randall: that's useful info. I think the stick in the '71 I am awaiting has been extended, and I will want to find a replacement, so knowing what will fit is essential /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

has anyone ever made one out of a real stick?

It's not a crazy idea, and would look *very* classy in walnut.

Well, maybe a little crazy. I've been known to shove pretty hard going into 3rd gear, and the thought of what might happen if that wood decided to break and splinter ...

I believe the TR3's are straight and beginning with the TR4 they have a curved stick. Of course the trans all interchange so a TR6 could have an earlier transmsson.
