TR6 TR6 fanbelt whine

A couple days ago I replaced my alternator/fan belt on my 74 TR6. The old one was showing some signs of wear, especially the inside edge was shinney and the rubber was hard, but it was working fine. My car has A/C, making the job a little more difficult because of the extra belt and pulley on the crank. The new belt is from TRF, and is a v-groove with the same markings as the old one. When I next ran the car, I thought I must have tightened the belt too much because of the obvious whine it now has. (I didn't replace the A/C belt since it doesn't work anyway.) After slacking and reseting the alternator, the belt noise can still be heard from inside the car. It's a high pitched whine that I never heard before. Do I have the wrong belt? Too tight? Should it always have made this noise?

Check to see if the belt is rubbing on something and you could also spray on a little belt dressing. If that does not help, others can suggest what else to try.
 
The only Noise I have ever heard a belt make is the typical squeel on acceleration caused by it bieng too loose. A whine, Maybe it is too tight creating excessive pressure on a bearing. Typicaly, there should be about 1 inch of play in the belt. Grab it in the middle of the longest section between pulleys and wiggle it up and down, there should be about 1/2 in play in either direction. Or losen it up a bit, see if the whine changes pitch or goes away.
If it starts squeeling, you`ll know its too loose hahahaha. I`v heard power steering pumps whine like crazy because there low on fluid. They get too low they even start growling at you. {I need more oil}

You could do the screwdriver in the ear trick on the alternator, waterpump and other bearings and see if they are singing to ya.

Power Steering pumps have a tendancy to perfer Red Whine dale.

When I adjusted the new belt (a little looser) the whine pitch dropped. It was making no noise before I replaced the belt, so I don't think it's a bearing or the water pump. It's probably looser than the the original belt was -because I intentionally tightened it up when I saw how dried the belt edge was getting to be, and thought it was slipping causing my ignition light to occasionally to be on.

I'm not good at adjustments involving "movement". If I try hard enough, I can move a too tight belt an inch.

I'll try making it much looser and see if it squeels for red or white wine. -maybe it's whining to be painted red or white.

If you're concerned with movement under pressure, and not familiar with how much pressure to apply; grab a fish scale, hook the scale hook onto a loop (tie rap) around the belt, pull up 10-15 lbs. you should see about 1/2 inch movement.

Try to place the scale midway between the longest stretch between pulleys.
 
When you changed the alternator, did you re-use the pulley from the old alternator? There are two sizes to these things, 3/8" and 1/2".
