TR6 TR6 Exhaust system ideas NOW WITH A PICTURE !!!!!

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Roof,
IMHO, take a look at Shannon's setup and think along those lines. I have the Falcon system (headers, back) and the darn things are a real pain to mount. Plus, the mufflers are hugh and drag constantly. Mine are mounted as high as they will go and still have gouges along the bottom. I had to resort to doing as solid mount with flex pipes up front. Get somebody who will take the time using quality stainless pipes and can rig custom hangers and using compact mufflers, tuck the system up high.
The standard Triumph hangers are a joke. Get your guy to weld on some of those "hook" type hangers with insulated rings, things like that. I think Shannon even used some 3-bolt flanges, which are cool. Just get a guy that will spend the time with your car. Most muffler shops love to use a brazing tip an tack everything to your frame. If your guy pulls out a brazing rod, run, don't walk away.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Hey Jim (roofman),I thought you told me you found a stainless system with your local car club??????

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Hey Allen, I kinda did. I got the two mufflers new, I will have the local Muffler shop custom make the pipes. I got the 2 stainless steel mufflers for $50 and a couple hours last night of my time helping a club member install 2 front fenders.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

I got the exhaust system put on this morning and it looks and sounds awesome. I have bee tying to upload pictures but my file is too big ( thats what she said ). Any one know how to reduce the picture size? I use Microsoft XP and am trying to upload from My Pictues. Thanks

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

What package are you using to save the original pictures?

You need to save as .jpg and reduce the quality until it is less than 200000 bytes total.

Try cropping if its tough to maintain quality. If you have Photoshop or the Nikon Picture Project I'll give you more detailed instructions, but without knowing what you have its tough to be more specific.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

I spent a lot of money a while ago for the 6-3-2 header system and the Falcon SS 2 pipe to the middle of the back. Had them all jet coated went to install them and the middle pipes dont match to the header and tail section. makes me want to build one as what you guys are starting to do.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

I've learned a heckuva lot with my custom exhaust stint. I'll try to explain:

1. If you want something that looks exotic (like custom stainless), you'll pay dearly.

2. Not many exhaust shops know how to bend stainless. Shop around and look at some of their work.

3. Think about how you want it to look, how you want it mounted, do you want to be able to remove it without cutting it out or otherwise mangling the pipe?

4. 1.875" pipe, which the Falcon sport uses, is hard to get in the US for some reason. I've used 2", which is probably borderline too big. I did finally find some 1.875" at Burns Stainless, but it's actually more expensive than 2" and it's only 16GA. For stainless 14GA is better for bending.

5. To keep it solid, you'll need to clamp or weld the pipes someway, the oem brackets don't seal too well under the best of conditions and regular brackets crimp the pipes to make it almost impossible to take the system apart. My first solution used flanges, but when I couldn't fully remove the mid section of the pipes from the "tunnel: so I decided some re-engineering had to be done. I found these at burns stainless:
Clamp-Vband.gif

I'm getting four of these welded in and I'm adding a couple resonators (ok I got stopped by the cops for being too loud), but those clamps should allow me to have a connector at the headers, then a short intermediary pipe, then the rear section. The exhaust will be mounted to rear cross member and rear differential mounting bolts, just like the Ansa system. So if I ever want to take the system out, I unbolt the four bolts on the clamps and the entire system literally comes right out.

This adventure to get the "perfect exhaust" has been VERY exhausting.. and expensive.. mainly because I didn't think everything through and had to re-engineer different aspects of the system. For example my first attempt at quad exhaust tips used Borla units, which looked great, but stick those 3" quad tips on the back of a tinnie-tiny TR6, and they look HUGE!! 2" pipes are the biggest that you can put on a TR6 and still look good IMO...at least for round pipes.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Shannon,

Do the flanges in your illustration weld to the pipes then fit neatly into the clamp mechanism?

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I am trying to figure out how to make the uploaded images smaller to fit the 200,000 limit.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Jim, what brand mufflers are they, and can you describe the sound and how loud compared to other mufflers/systems??

As you see, the flanges that I currently have don't allow me to remove the center piece from the tunnel... and moving it fore and aft is more difficult than it seems, in order to be able to get to the from u-joint, I had to unbolt the trans tunnel and jack up the tranny, and remove the trans mount. Not a fun project when you're not expecting it.

71TR,

I got the clamps yesterday and let me say they're slick. Even my exhaust guy liked them (and he likes things welded). The clamps look like they'd make a pretty tight seal... much better than the oem stuff.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Very, very nice! The flanges coupled with the quality exuded all through the bends and welds really make the system look "racer" duty and allow "quick disconnect" only when needed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Shannon:

Are these the mufflers that you had made in Florida? One way or the other can you pass along the name of the shop(s) that made this system and/or the parts for all of it?

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Thanks, still working on it. How do all you computer wizbangs upload photos onto this site? I can upload to email, ebay, etc. but cannot seem to be able to upload to this site. Photos are " too large".I just tried a Yahoo photo site that I can access but I deleted it because the link would not open. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

This site uses teeney pics. Keep reducing you'll get there

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

If you are using WinXP it is easy. First all images must be a ".jpg" format. Then take all of the originals that you want to post, select them as a group and right click the group. Choose the resize picture option and go to advanced. Go to the custom button and type in 550 and 413 in the spots for the pixel size. That will give you pics as used on my web site below. If you want them smaller, reduce each size equally, like by 10% or 20% each. This will create and exact copy of the image with a custom added to it's name and it will be much smaller than the original and you will be able to post by following directions given by Basil.

Keep in mind that you cannot post pictures unless they are already posted somewhere on the web unless you choose to "attach" them to a post one by one. Sorry, not my rules, but rules of the forum. It's one of the things that prompted me to get off my butt and create my web site.

Re: TR6 Exhaust system ideas

Thanks Brosky !!!!!! Computers are like Triumphs and women, they can drive you nuts at times. Finally got the exhaust system pix loaded. To answer past posts. These are stainless steel mufflers that I bought from a friend for $50 and some barter of labor. They have 2" inlet and 2 1/2 dual outlets each. I had a muffler shop install them with aluminized pipe, and resonators in line to each muffler. My car is a driver so I did not go into all the detail that others have engineered in, but I am happy with the results. The sound is still very much like stock but a little louder, and a little lower tone. The picture makes them look lower to the ground than they are. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
