TR6 TR6 door rattles

With spring around the corner I figured I'd try to make that first drive of the year enjoyable and I would try to fix the rattles in my doors that have been driving me nuts for years. After removing the door panel the only obvious rattles I can see is the metal bar from the inside door handle to the rear of the door latch mech. Needs a new pad behind it. There is also a metal rod at the bottom of the door that hooks around the glass track on each end of the door and is fastened down in the center. Does anybody know the purpose of this rod besides just laying there and rattleing around? The rod is not fasten at either end but just hooks around the track. Thanks for your help......

Not a direct answer to your question, but since you are in there you might want to put some sound deadening material on the door skin. Apologies if you've already been there / applied that but it can make a very nice difference.

I wonder if your window glass is rattling in the window channels, as well. Also, my door rattles because of the non-existant Furflex seals around the door openings...

I've noticed that mine rattle at thetop of the door, when
the window's down.I'm afraid to start on it - "Well,as long as-
I'm doing this,I might as well pull the door apart and....".
That would probably lead to a frame-off restoration.

When driving with the top down, the rattles aren't as noticable.

I am almost to the point of forgetting about and living with the rattles. I have replaced the window tracks twice over the years. The fabric/felt track liners deteriorate(fall off) after a few years and the rattles are back. It could be our rust belt weather.

You may want to take yours to an upholstery shop to have them restored.

Yea mine rattle too, I am guessing that rod at the bottom keep the window channels from spreading apart. There is alos an angle bracket at the bottom that should have some felt on it. I also wired that rod to the bracket

Might help might not

Floyd,

A couple of things that will help, some have been mentioned allready.

- Fatmat or Dynamat in the doors helps tremendously
- Relining you door window channels helps as well. See Bobby D's Website https://tr6.danielsonfamily.org/WindowChannel.htm
- That spreader bar at the bottom of the door should also be hooked in the center to an L shaped bracket with a small piece of felt that supports the window when it is down. Change the felt out as well.
- There is a small piece of foam that you can replace behind the door lock mechanism to keep it from rattling
- Tighten all the regulator mounting and window track mounting screws while you are in there.

Cheers,

Assuming that you sort out the window mechanisms and are still not satisfied, here are some thoughts about these cars.
The TR car bodies, unlike monocoque design cars suffer from flexing quite a bit. There's not too much that can be done about it. If you have any doubt, next chance you get, have someone drive your car on a rough road and watch or have someone video you driving. Focus on the door gaps. It's amazing to see them open and close as the body flexes. This flexure can cause noise as the door latches change position. My TR250 has a surrey top. When the steel center section is in place the added rigidity is supprising. You might want to consider a TR6 hardtop at some point in the future.

thanks for all the replies. Surprisingly the felt in the tracks looked to be in fairly good condition. I think the main cause of the rattles in the door was the worn pad behind the door mech. bar at the top and the wire rod that hooks around the tracks at the bottom. The felt there is shot so that gets a new piece too. I understand that the rod hooking around the track would keep the tracks from spreading apart but the brackets at the bottom of each track seems to be pretty stout to hold the tracks themselves. A little padding at the hooks to I guess, Thanks again.....
