TR6 TR6 Diffy - Dumb ? But Thought I'd Ask Anyway

Was pulling out the new Stebro Dual that was temporarily hanging with zip ties and noticed a "too large" glob of gear oil. Seeing that the old girl had been at rest seemed like too much to ignore. The obvious culprit is the pinion seal but the right and left inner axle seals likely contribute also (probably the rear cover seal too!)

The query is this.............can the pinion seal be changed without pulling the diffy? Looks like the inner axle seal housings can be unbolted while in place but not sure about the pinion seal.

Would like to fix the obvious leaks the "easy" way. If it comes out then a rebuild and body mount mod would be in order (needless to say longer, harder, more green stamps).

Can I cheat? :nonod:

According to page 51.20.01 of the TR6 manual, the pinion seal must be replaced with the differential (hypoid casing) out of the frame. It does not state the housing must be removed to do the axle seals, but it's probably best to do everything right and on the bench.

Then you can really clean out the junk inside the casing after 30+ years of driving and also replace the housing rubber mounts.

If you need any printed literature for this, send a PM me.

Thanks Paul, the manual I had never really stated that you had to have the diffy out of the car to replace the pinion seal, but it assumes you would. I was having a hard time determining what was necessary that would require it, other than more optimum working conditions on a bench vs under the chassis. Was hoping to put off the full rebuild of the rear end until I got to the point of a more full restoration. May just live with a drippy diffy on the new stainless until the winter. No other real issues I am aware of except for the leak(s).

I know nothing about TR6 diffs, but I assume it uses crush spacer on the pinion just like Spits. Once you loosen the nut, the spacer is trashed. I've heard they can be reused, if you are careful to tighten it back the same number of flats that you loosen it. Tough to do in the car. I too would just drive it until its ready to come out for a proper going through.
