TR6 TR6 Dash refinish: a nice surprise

So I finally got time to totally remove the dash from the TR6 to refinish it. As it turns out, instead of the stock teak veneer, it obviously has already been replaced once with (get this) a solid piece of teak!!!

A quick few passes with the sander and it looks great! Just put on some polyurethane clear that I'll probably steel wool down to a more matte finish and hopefully have it back in the car in a day or two.

I love nice surprises.

I think Moss sold a solid teak dash for a while.

I like nice surprises, like finding that my TR8 had Koni shocks all around.

My son chose teak veneer for the dash of the Spitfire. It looks really nice.

If you have not already applied the urethane, do a search for teak refinishing. There are lots of marine web sites that discuss it. Most recommend spar varnish instead of urethane. I have no idea if it really makes a difference.

I did both sides of the glovebox door, but the backside of the main part of the board was still clean after obviously many years exposed to moisture.

As for teak and boats, my gut reaction is to do whatever is opposite of boat people. My father-in-law had a sailboat with a teak deck and it had to be varnished seemingly every year or two. I think boat owners are masochists. (Coming from a guy who has lived on the water most of his life, but has never owned a boat larger than a kyak or three-person inflatable.)
