TR6 TR6 Console ala JC Whitney

One of the guys on 6-Pack found these and posted it, so I decided that I would get one and it arrived today.

I didn't know it was here until a few minutes ago, so I don't have time to mess with the car tonight. I did do a web page for it TR6 Console and I'll post some in car pics tomorrow or Saturday.

Now I've GOT to get one of those folding cup holders.

How wide is the padded part, and does it come in various colours?

I see the site, says grey and black...yet it shows blue...go figure.

Needs a 5" space between seats, but exactly how wide is it?

Dave

I installed one about four years ago in my TR4. I had to cut the legs off a bit to get it to sit atop the tunnel. I bought a cup holder at Walmart and hacked it up to fit inside. I was in Walmart last week and noticed they still had the cup thingie. The hinge on the console is very weak. After I broke it I replaced with a piano hinge. I drilled and installed two studs in the lid and drilled two corresponding holes in the base to keep the lid from moving side to side when shut.

Edit: Forgot to answer other question. It is 5" wide.

Mark, do you have a close up of the piano hinge and also a few more views of the cup holder? Yo8u don't remember the Walmart part number by any chance?

This is a no brainer, so far. Just slip it in for a test fit, remove and tighten wing nuts and drop it back in.

When I get the final version of the ARE seat brackets installed, I will make provisions to bolt this down, unless I like BobbyD's better, which I will then have to go back to woodworking 101.

Paul, I will take some pictures tomorrow evening. Got a car show tomorrow and am going to a rookie league ball game (farm team for the Reds) tonight.

Bill, if I keep it, it will probably be brown soon, but I'm looking real hard at BobbyD's on Sunday at the DOT show. I may build one of those, as it is longer and looks more natural. The upholstery shop has matching material left over from my Miata seat project to cover that project.

Thanks for the tip on the opening.

Mark, whenever you can get them will be fine. This will be in until I can get my tonneau and possible BD console built, which if it's anything like the hardtop headliner, will be next spring.

By the way, are you coming to the show Sunday?

Looks very nice! I like the cup holders which eliminates the problem of where to set your drink and when not needed, a nice arm rest with the lid down. Great Idea! PJ

Anyone have a picture of an original AMCO center console installed in a TR4A/250 or TR6? I have one and am considering restoring and installing it. It looks like the front of it fits over the to the top of the gear shift housing and I'm not sure I'll like that look. Thanks, Ben....

It's only temporary until I eyeball Bobby's tomorrow and get started on making one like his. I went for a short one hour ride today and it does make it a lot more comfortable. It actually doesn't look as bad in the car as it does highlighted in these pictures.

I sure do !!! This is OEM
I think that universal center looks well kinda cheap so I will side with Hondo, plus cup holders ??
what's next a cell phone clip and a tray for a quick bite

A sport car is to be driven

Guess thats why America auto makers differ from the rest of the world

but thats just my opinion

Probably........

Thansk for the picture. It's identical to the one I have. That's how I assumed it fit (over the rear of the gear shift surround). I'm surprised there's room for the ashtry and lighter there. Looks better than I imagined it might. I've repaired some cracks and now I need to get the armrest recovered to match my seats. I looked up the 4x8 speaker size - rather oddball, but found "Classic Car Speakers" which has them for about $40. The power tap (cigarette lighter) could come in handy and the speaker may make the radio actually audible vs the footwell mount.

More stuff about my console as requested. This is the Walmart piece I hacked up to fit in the Whitney Console

The Amco console with ashtray and lighter was original to the TR4 and TR4A. This was a 1 piece unit.

The TR250 and TR6 came with an ashtray, so Amco changed the console. It now came in 2 parts, with a new cap over the shifter that had a Kienzle clock that matched the dash gauges. Triumph Consoles Ltd. sells theirs with a Smiths clock that almost perfectly matches the Kienzle unit. The console could be purchased in full, or w/ only the rear 1/2 with the arm rest.

Either console will fit any TR4-TR6.

I think that I have one of those cup holders in the garage somewhere. Thanks for the tip.

I have a Kienzle clock that I picked up years ago but console prices went so high, I never found one I could afford.

Just nitpicking, but I'm skeptical that the design was for a TR4 - no center emergency brake, and also a different front console - if Amco marketed one for a TR4, I think it would have been unique to the TR4.

BenZ "Classic Car Speakers" which has them for about $40

Thats where I purchased my speaker, perfect fit

just be cautious as the plastic is fragile and getting over the emergency brake and under the shift lever

anchor point are rear, between the seats and on the shift lever

I used 4 SS screws w/cups (same ones used to retain the rear board in front of petrol tank) as for the 2 needed for the rear deck use 2 ss 1/2 and the black cap as used on door panels
