TR6 TR6 Brake Problems

I am having problems with my brakes in my 73 TR6. I have posted once on this before but want to make sure I'm correct on everything. In my master holding tank there is black stuff. I think it is the seals in the master going bad. Is that correct? I'm thinking this is the major problem with my brakes. I just want to make sure it is not one of my brake calipers causing the problem. The brake on the front drivers side squeals when braking. On Sunday after I drove a while I had no pedal so I used a self bleeder on all wheels. The pedal got good enough(not great) and then had to rebleed my brakes on Tuesday because the pedal was mushy/not hard. On Tuesday I only bleed the front brakes and the pedal got good enough(not great) once again. Now I have to pump the brakes a little to get my pedal back to good enough. I hope all this makes sense. I am planning on rebuilding the master but am asking to see if there is something else that might be causing this problem. I've had master cylinder problems off and on for years now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I would not continue driving the car until the problem is fixed. The black would be deteriorating rubber in the system. Eventually it will fail.
 
It is my daily driver so I'm continueing to drive the car extremely careful. I want to know if the master is my only problem or if I might have a problem somewhere else.
 
there's a seal at the verry bottom of the master cylinder plunger that is supposed to block off the inlet from the reservoir (rear wheel) as you press the brake pedal. This rubber seal gets hard and no longer seals, so you end up pushing fluid back up into the reservoir instead of out to the brakes. Problems at the calipers or wheel cylinders almost always result in wet backing plates or fluid on the inside of the wheel. Get it fixed soon!

I'd suggest taking the master off and taking it to a place that either sells rebuilt master cylinders, or does the rebuilding, and get it replaced or rebuilt.

For a long time I had to constantly replace the seals on my master cylinder (once a year), and it turned out that it needed to be replaced due to uneven wear. I got a rebuilt one and haven't had a problem since. As mentioned above its unlikely the problem is with the wheel cylinders.

I'll second that!

My Stag had a problem when I bought it where sometimes the pedal would slowly sink while sitting stopped at a light. Obviously needed new seals in the MC, but I thought it would be no big deal due to the dual circuit brakes. However, literally on the way to the shop to have the MC rebuilt (along with several other things), both circuits failed within a few miles of each other!

Tried to limp on to the shop using the handbrake ... which faded to uselessness when I tried to get off the freeway. Sailed right through the intersection, fortunately no one was coming.

BTW, the squeal is probably not related to the hydraulic problems. I'd fix the hydraulics first, then worry about the squeal.
